glut of compilation albums highlighting the country's enormous music scene. The disappointing thing about many of these collections, however, is that they tend to churn out the same tunes instead of mining into the multitude of untouched musical riches Brazil has to offer. Thankfully, this album isn't guilty of the same. Its 31 tracks offer a bigger insight than most into the astounding diversity of Brazil's music. The inevitable stalwarts of the bossa nova and samba scenes are all present here, turning in requisite classics such as Tom Jobim's gently swinging "Aquas de Marco", Joyce's fabulous "Feminina", Elis Regina on Gilberto Gil's "Roda" and Airto Moreira's uptempo "Samba De Flora". But there are quite a few artists here who, although huge in Brazil, are largely ignored on compilations such as this. Jorge Ben, Daniela Mercury, Lenine, Timbalada and rising star Beatriz Azevedo all get a well-earned look in for once and consequently bring pop, rock, folk, roots and reggae to a well-rounded album that, more than most, reflects the truly eclectic sound of modern and traditional Brazil. --Paul Sullivan
Advantages: Great Songs You Remember From Films Disadvantages: Dancing The 'Hot Stuff' From 'The Full Monty'!!
...I am a huge music fan, I have been since I was old enough to listen and since that day, I have had a diverse music taste, I cannot pin point my favourite genre and I find music very uplifting & I especially love music in films.
So, did you, like me, love the music used in Uma Thurman & John Travolta's dancing scene in 'Pulp Fiction', did you feel Donna Summer's 'Hot Stuff' dancing scene in 'The Full Monty' was great, did you love the hustle soundtrack to 'Lock, Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels'? Are you a Film Four fan? If you can answer yes to any of these questions, I am certain you'd find something you like on this album.
Essential Soundtracks was released back in 1999, the second year of my A-levels and I bought this CD in Woolies for a mere £4.99 for a 40 track double CD, I purely bought this for the more trendy numbers from...

Advantages: loads of tracks Disadvantages: some seem quite dated
...A six CD box set which showcases a huge selection of tracks from the drum and bass scene.
Drum and bass has gained huge popularity over the years and has gained alot of followers thanks to its breaknecks speeds of drums, bass and sample ridden madness. These tracks show you what is all about and my gosh there is alot of them.
The tracks span right back to the early nineties and some can sound very dated but interesting nether the less. Producers which stand out on the album are the big heavy weights such as 'Dillinja' with his awesome track 'Grimey' with its huge pitch bending bass synth and the unforgettable vocal sample, this one will keep you going till the early hours. Then there is J-magik, with his equally powerful but more jazzy power rhythms.
If your a fan of this hi speed music you will defenitely find this box set...

Advantages: Varied popular songs plus some obscure ones Disadvantages: The obscure songs are probably not to everyones taste
...This is the second CD I have brought from this series, I find these CD's a general overview of the years music relating to well known tracks to some that are unknown to me. This therefore make is a very good album to listen to as you know what you are getting from some of the songs. artists like Sterophonics, Muse, Athlete, The Libertines and so on are well known and will appeal to the majority. There are however some more obscure songs bands like Client, Bees, which although are not to bad for my taste they may not appeal to everyone.
On the whole I have found this to be a good album in my collection and one that I will listen to if I can not make up my mind. If you like the main popular songs on this album then I would recommend to have this in your collection....
