For me, Bondage Goat Zombie was eagerly awaited, after their previous masterpiece of Pestapocalypse IV, I thought it impossible to top, and did it?? No, but definitely equalled it.
In my mind, this album is perfection, it is the precision, technical blast beats from the bowels of hell, the swinging rythms and crunching riffing with sublime ultra satanic growls and heretic screaming we have come to know and love and expect from Helmuth and it is this combination that works everytime with their albums which proves the old addage that 'if it aint broken.... don't fix it'.
Continually we are seeing bands trying to change their sound, get more intellectual or commercial, or pretend that they have gone all trippy from mind expanding drugs, which was common place in the 60's and 70's, which is tired and downright lazy! but in all honesty, most of the time, you listen to a band, particularly with this genre of blackened death metal, because you like their sound, you like them
exactly as they are, and it is that sound, look, feel etc... that the fans want, even if it is slightly regurgitated, and with this album, Belphegor have looked over all of their albums, taken all of the best bits from each, torn them in half, chewed them up, ate a virgin and regurgitated this masterpiece that epitomises their sound and reproduces exactly what their fans wanted!!!!!
1. Title track BGZ: Ultimately cool, after a demonic voice states, 'in hell we burn' you are hit by perfect blast beating with a quintessential helmuth rhythm, nice start, the lyrical content of sathan, sadomasichism and apparently zombies are the order of the day, a spectacularly brutal start to the album.
2. Stigma diabolicum: starts off a bit slower, cleaner, and almost dissapointing until the crunch hits after the short intro, song proceeds to weave in and out of rythmic double bass blasts to single blast beats back to a slower pace, the time changes make you dizzy with glee!
3. Armaggedons reign: here is one example of the 'formula' back at work, the time changes in parts are almost to similar with the previous song, the only real criticism I have is about the order of the song line up, these 2 are too close to each other in sound, drumming time changes etc.... still a classic song, just slightly overshadowed by its predecessor.
4. Justine soaked in blood: all round cool time changes from up beat thrashy to down tuned slow crunching chords screaming 'dead fucked to pieces', love it!!!!!
5. Sexdictator Lucifer:Sticking with the last song, slowed, brutal, it is all about the lyrics, sadomasichistic orgasms flying at you. The whole song is slow but the end leaves you with that feeling you are about to get a taste of some serious fucking speed!
6. Shred for sathan: and does it shred! like most albums of Belphegor, they are fast, but always have the ultrafast, brutal track that leaves you with post traumatic stress disorder because it feels like you have had several machine guns shooting right at you, shell shock is nothing compared to this song! Play this song loud, play this repeatedly, play this song to you decaying deaf grandma neighbour, turn that knob all the way upto 11 because 10 just won't do this fucking song justice! Do your part to SHRED FOR SATHAN!!!!!!!
7. Chronicles of crime: simply awesome, good, wholesome, brutal death metal!
8. and 9. the sukkubus lustrate and Der Rutenmarsch: this song deserves to be in the hall of fame for something just for having the word sukkubus in the title! But this song, which actually is 2 songs as the same rhythm and chord structure flow into the next song, actually it should just be one, perhaps they needed and extra track so chopped this in 2, I don't know, but I love these 2 tracks. it is not the fastest of the tracks, in fact in parts is the slowest, there is less lyrics then most, you know what? I will say no more, it is my favourite track and I WANT YOU to experince this song, it sent chills down my spine and the hairs on the back of my neck stand on edge, you know when you get that feeling from a song, it is a good one!
Buy this album, support death and black metal artists! these guys don't do it for the money, not many of them are rich, they make almost no money from touring and can only tour if people are buying their albums, so buy this album, it is one of the best that will ever exist in this genre, it is timeless and a 'must have' for any self respecting metaller!
Thanks for reading!
