I discovered Loreena McKennitt few years ago, absolutely by chance. At that time, I was really attracted by Celtic music and I went to a huge shop to purchase a cd called "a woman's heart" (a compilation of beautiful songs performed by Irish female singers).
Just before going to the check-out, I noticed a really beautiful and relaxing music playing in the shop. Exactly the kind of music that keeps you in, with a little voice in your head telling you : DON'T return in the stress of the town outside ....
I asked a guy from the shop what it was, and he gave me the title of the album and the name of the singer. It was "the Book of Secrets" by Loreena McKennitt.
Finally, I bought an extra cd that was'nt planned at first on my shopping list, but I have never regretted that purchase.
Once, I lent this cd to my "stretching" teacher. She enjoyed it so much, that she bought it too and that we spent all the rest of the stretching courses till the end of the year listening to it !
This is the kind of music you can't get enough of, but you tend to become addicted to it very fast !
This album is simply FABULOUS !
You travel through the world with the different rythms and sounds, and the several styles of musics. While listening, if you close your eyes, you feel once in Turkey, then in Ireland and in Asia ... But wherever the music takes you to, it is with a soft and relaxing music, maybe also good for meditation ?
the album is divided into 8 "songs" : 1. PROLOGUE 4:22 2. THE MUMMERS' DANCE 6:07 3. SKELLIG 6:07 4. MARCO POLO 5:15 5. THE HIGHWAYMAN 10:19 6. LA SERENISSIMA 5:09 7. NIGHT RIDE ACROSS THE CAUCASUS 8:30 8. DANTE'S PRAYER 7:11
Included with the cd, you'll find a really complete booklet describing Loreena's trip around the world. As she mentions : ".... so, you set out to travel to Rome... and end up in Istanbul. You set off for Japan... and you end up on a train across Siberia. The journey, not the destination, becomes a source of wonder ...".
Despite her name, Loreena McKennitt is from Canada (but she feels to the Celtic lineage), she'll take you to places you've never been before for a low price.
Let's say that this album is the cheapest way to travel "ZEN" !
