Flying Solo

Advantages: Almost universally accepted, makes you more financially aware
Disadvantages: Can't write cheques, not a lot really!

gives you status. Maybe you want to buy something over the phone, or using the internet. Maybe you even have a money-making scheme or two in mind. Solo makes all this possible. But at the same time, you (and perhaps more importantly your parents!) don?t want to let your spending get out of control. Remember when Dad said you could buy something on his credit card and received a bill to the tune of £500 for thirty-seven items? You?ll have to spend much more carefully now you have your own card. In this way, you?ll gain financial independence whilst learning about the way finance works in the real world - unless you?re Bill Gates or J.K. Rowling there isn?t a bottomless pit of money you know! That?s why Solo is such a great idea for teenagers. Solo isn?t just for teenagers though. There's not an upper age limit for owning a Solo card. This ...

Going Solo

Advantages: Can't get into debt, lots of shops take it, from 11 with some banks,
Disadvantages: Woolies don't take it!

feature, this varies depending on what bank you are with. I think NatWest’s commission rate is 2.25%, so if for example you take out or spend £100 worth of local currency abroad you will be charged £2.25. Not bad really considering the bureau de change charge around £3 commission. Solo is a great card that lets you feel important by paying with plastic but keeps you out of debt. And it means you have to carry around less cash with you. So if you don’t have one – get one now. Some banks even give you CD’s or vouchers for opening an account. Cheers James By the way I have put excellent for competitiveness of APR, but ignore it as is not releavant to Solo. ...

Flying Solo

Advantages: No worries about carrying cash
Disadvantages: Many well known stores don't accept them

Switch, Delta, Electron, Solo - they're all basically the same. I used to have a Switch card - accepted by virtually every shop or service - a debit card by any other name. I now have a Solo card, due to recent financial difficulties it was all I could get. This works in much the same way as a Switch card - it's a debit card which you hand over in place of cash for payment and saves time and hassle writing cheques. Funds are normally debited from your bank account within one to two working days and you can also get up to £50 cashback with it where that facility is available. It will not allow you to go overdrawn on your account unless you already have an overdarft facility - unusual with accounts offering a Solo card to begin with. BUT, and it's a big but, not all the expected shops - including large, well-known stores, accept ...
