Advantages: A touching, very British story Disadvantages: Nothing particularly outstanding about it
, an old flame of Gloria is delighted to see her again and they restart their relationship. But will the colliery be saved? And will the band make it through to the National Championships at the Albert Hall.
The characters
There are a lot of familiar faces in this film, including Ewan McGregor, Tara Fitzgerald, Stephen Tompkinson, Sue Johnston, Philip Jackson (Poirot's Inspector Japp) Peter Martin (Len from Emmerdale Farm) and Melanie Hill (Aveline Boswell from Bread). For me, the star of the film was Pete Postlethwaite who plays the band leader, Danny. His sheer determination to hold the band together although he is aware that his health is failing comes shining through and he gave an excellent performance. Stephen Tompkinson also does a superb job as Phil. I wasn't particularly impressed at first, but his talent eventually comes shining ...
Advantages: 15 tracks! Disadvantages: Most of which were already available
Gala isn't an original album as such its actually a compilation of several EP's Lush had already released which were the Sweetness & Light EP, the Mad Love EP and the Scar EP. It featured 1 totally new track, an ABBA cover and a track that had previously been available on an NME cover cd. As it predates all their other "official" albums by 2 years you can think of it as their "first" album.
Lush were around during the 1990s as part of the shoegazer movement & at the time of this "album" consisted of Emma Anderson & Miki Bereyni who both sang, played guitar and also wrote words and music. Standing behind and to the side of them were Steve Rippon who played bass (I guess Phil King hadn't replaced him yet?) and Chris Acland who played drums, his tragic death led to the eventual break up of the band.
So whats on Gala then?

Top 10 Bands I've Seen In Concert
Be warned, this is a long review, so make sure you're comfortable! :-P
For as long as I can remember I've been surrounded by music. My dad has a rather large cd collection with a wide variety of music from his love of 70s progressive rock (Yes, Genesis, Camel, King Crimson etc) to newer rock and pop artists (Mew, Robbie Williams, Ash, Stereophonics, White Stripes to name a few). My mum has strange taste too which again includes some 70s prog rock along with Scottish Folk Rock (Runrig, Wolfstone, Capercaillie, Dougie Maclean) and some newer stuff such as Dido, David Gray and U2.
As soon as I was old enough to be put into bouncy chair that attached to the door frame, I've been bouncing along to Runrig and Pat Benetar. At the age of 3 I could work my dad's cd player and refused to go to bed ...
