So there was I about to start tidying/packing for my leaving on Friday when I suddenly realised that there was a Black Sabbath album that I hadn't listened to in ages....then the thought of a review came upon me and alas my room will remain a pigsty and my bags will stay unpacked for the next wee while....
************* Background ************* Okay, so hands up who doesn't know who Black Sabbath are...any offers? If so then for early background I've written more Black Sabbath reviews then anything else, and pinkmatchstick also has several brilliant ones. To get to the point, Black Sabbath were originally fronted by the self-titled Prince of Darkness Ozzy Osbourne for the first 8 albums (the first 6 of which are ALL classics, the next 2 are just reasonable), then Ozzy left and Ronnie James Dio, him of small stature with the interesting changed name and exceptional voice. Dio was basically sacked due to arguments with Sabbath's guitarist Tony Iommi, Dio has numerous scathing comments about the live album (Live Evil) that was released post-Mob Rules, basically slagging off Iommi for taking too long over solos etc.
Anyhow, Sabbath needed a new vocalist and the man, who can in my humble opinion be considered one of the best rock vocalists of all time, Ian Gillan was going spare after splitting up his band Gillan....prior and post this Gillan made his name with another legendary band, Deep Purple. The story goes that Gillan met up with Sabbath, everyone got smashed, and Gillan received a phone call from his manager the next day slightly annoyed at Gillan having agreed to join Sabbath without consulting him! Another change from the previous two albums was that drummer Vinny Appice was replaced by original Sabbath drummer Bill Ward, making the line up: Ian GIllan (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler
(bass, real name Terrance!), Bill Ward (drums) and Geoff Nichols (keyboards).
So, what about the album....
************* Track listing ************* 1 - Trashed - well we know straight off who the new Sabbath vocalist is, Gillan's characteristic screams coming in over the fast paced chugging intro. Trashed refers both to the state of Gillan post-drinking and the state of his "bitch", his car (apparently based upon a sober near death crash of GIllans):
"Ahhh, Ah It really was a meeting The bottle took a beating The ladies of the manor Watched me climb into my car And I was going down the track about a hundred and five They had the stopwatch rolling Had the headlights blazing I was really alive And yet my mind was blowing I drank a bottle of tequila and I felt real good I had the tape deck roaring But on the twenty-fifth lap at the canal turn I went off exploring
I knew I wouldn't make it the car just couldn't take it I was turning, tires burning The ground was in my sky I was laughing. The bitch was trashed And death was in my eye"
A real rip-roarer of an opening track, but lyrically this isn't normal Sabbath in my opinion, all too light hearted, but it certainly gets you into the album and Iommi gets in a couple of neat, if somewhat distorted, solos.
2 - Stonehenge - One of Iommi's what I call fiddles....random, creepy sounding noises for about a minute and then what sounds like a heart beat comes in for the next minute, it gets faster and you know you're building to something....
3 - Disturbing the Priest - Gillan heckles devilishly as the heart beat stops and the band bash in....according to a recent issue of Metal Hammer, this song is based upon the visit from a local priest when they were recording, who asked them to turn things down a little while choir practice was on! The lyrics seem a bit more anti-the priest then this interview would suggest, but this is one of the stronger tracks on the album, powerful chorus and making the most of what Gillan can do vocally....this is one of several songs on this album that Ozzy, should he wish, but he wouldn't, would be unable to cover sufficiently!
"The force of the devil is the darkness the priest has to face The force of the night will destroy him but will not disgrace To get into his mind and to his soul you gotta set alight The flames of doubt so deep inside inside The devil and the priest can't exist if one goes away It's just like the battle of the sun and the moon and night and day The force of the devil, that's we're all told to fear Watch out for religion when he gets too near too near
We're disturbing the priest, won't you please come to our feast Do we mind disturbing the priest, not at all, not at all, not in the least"
4 - The Dark - just a waste of 45 seconds of your life, Iommi's fiddling again! It does lead nicely into track 5 though, the intro swamping The Dark....
5 -Zero the Hero - An epic (approaching 8 minutes) track, the riff of which has been suggested to inspire that used in Guns 'n' Roses Paradise City, the similarities are definitely there! Really grungy, dirty riff throughout with cool lyrics...has been covered by Cannibal Corpse, but I can't compare as I've never heard their version. As we enter minute 4 Iommi solos away, brilliant as per usual, while the riff just keeps banging on. Love it. One piece of advice, this songs must be listened to with the volume UP.
lively opening, but really a non-Sabbath sounding song, perhaps about a lady Gillan disliked?!:"She wears hot leather just to satisfy She really throws it around There ain't one thing she can't afford to buy She's the richest bitch in town Her big fat daddy was a money machine He made a fortune from computers She got more money than I've ever seen But she's a greedy emotional looter
Keep away from the digital bitch Keep away from the digital bitch I keep away from the digital bitch She's so rich, the digital bitch ahhh"
I guess this track rocks nicely, with some wicked work from Iommi, but it just doesn't really do it for me...
7 - Born Again - the title track and a good choice: brilliant song. A slow, moody opening, Gillan sings emotionally and on the chrous as Iommi powers in we get some classic Gillan screaming, again beyond what Ozzy could do, not that I'm criticising Ozzy, his vocals suit Sabbath best I feel, just that he is a different type of singer and Gillan does what he does best here, great stuff. Another brilliant solo from Iommi as the track nears its end.
8 - Hot Line - Bog standard, decent riff I guess, nothing exceptional, but not that bad really, maybe I'm just wanting more! Iommi's second solo is interesting to say the least, fastest on the album and makes an average track a hell of a lot better! In fact as I'm listening maybe I've been too critical, it's actually quite powerful stuff, nice vocal power from Gillan synergises with a decent riff to make quite a good track actually!
9 - Keep it warm - Feelings for a lady friend:
"Sweet woman are you feeling right What was it that you did last night You made me crazy you made me fly I can't forget the hungry look in your eye Ooh what's the matter with me I'm justa runner I was born free But since I met you I can't leave you alone I'm leaving now but I'll be coming home"
Slower, moodier, but nothing special and I think I mean it this time :) Although Iommi's solo is again quite cool as the song picks up tempo, before getting down and dirty again for the final verse.
************ Cover/inlay ************ I can't comment on the inlay as I've lost it! The cover has a fabulous picture of a demonic looking baby/feotus, quite poor art really, looks like someone with my level of skill playing with Photoshop, or perhaps on a second look, merely Paint! The glowing eyes and fangs make me chucklu rather than shocked!
****** Cost ****** On Amazon for £8.99, sure you can get a better deal somewhere!
************* Conclusion ************* Right, this is a difficult one. If I ignore the fact that this is Sabbath and Gillan and take it as just any old album then it's actually quite good, but if you're a fan of either the initial Ozzy phase, or the first Dio era, then it's certainly different, this is largely down to Gillan who's vocal ability is so very different. The photos I'm attaching also show a difference in ideas...no black leather for Mr. Gillan!
The album also has more tracks of a light hearted nature compared to previous Sabbath albums, nothing really about drugs (a common factor for Sabbath: Hand of Doom, Sweet Leaf, Snowblind etc. on successive albums) and more about women.
So yes, this is a good album, but not a good introduction to Sabbath because they only did this one album and one embarrassing tour (where Ward was replaced by Bev Bevan from ELO (!!!!!!!!!!!!!) for health reasons and for those who have seen This is Spinal Tap, the whole dwarf/Stonehenge episode was generated by the Born Again tour). I think it's a good stand alone album and if you're a fan of Gillan then this in my opinion is certainly better than some of his other work. If you're expecting a Deep Purplesque sound then bad luck, other than the vocals it's a no go, no Mr. Lord on Hammond organ for starters :) Perhaps best to buy if you're a big Gillan fan, or like me, happen to own virtually every Black Sabbath album released.
Right, well I hope you enjoyed that and it's of some use!

Good review, none of my favourite Sabbath tracks are on this album and it's not something i'd listen to really. Nice to see someone who's a fan able to criticise where it's due :) Great x
