BORN IN THE USA - The massively powerful title track that seems to have become a patriotic anthem despite its anti-establishment sentiment and its open criticism of the Vietnam War. I suppose Bruce Springsteen is the Marmite of the music world - you either love him or you hate him - or, like many youngsters who encountered him at Glastonbury this year, you have never heard of him (shame on you).
For me, any music that evokes memories of my mid-80s school discos, is automatically beyond any criticism, and the title track from this album is no exception. Of course, one track doesn't make an album, but it can very often be the sole reason for purchasing it.
I have often thought that Springsteen's lyrics were a little suspect, but very often these take second place to the power and emotion of the music and the mood he creates - and this album is Bruce at his raw, belting best.

COVER ME - A love song of sorts, with an underlying message of how hard life has become (5/10)
DARLINGTON COUNTY - A relatively upbeat tale of two guys misbehaving on a road-trip (7/10)
WORKING ON THE HIGHWAY - Paced halfway between Rockabilly and Line-dance, this is a foot-tapping account of the weekend antics of a road-working gang (8/10)
DOWNBOUND TRAIN - A moving, heartfelt story of regret and despair that will touch all but the hardest hearts (6/10)
I'M ON FIRE - Released in 1984 as the AA-side to Born In The USA, I remember being completely captivated on first hearing this song and thinking that it was the best ballad I had ever heard. 25 years on, my opinion is still the same (10/10)
No SURRENDER - A back-slapping tale of friendship and cameraderia with a feel-good vibe to it (6/10)
BOBBY JEAN - Another friendship story but this time with a much sadder edge to it. Whoever Bobby Jean is, he's not happy that she's gone (7/10)
I'M GOIN' DOWN - My least favourite song on the album. The theme this time is a relationship that has obviously run its course and become a little tired. I find the clappy rhythm a little annoying (4/10)
GLORY DAYS - Anyone who looks down and can only just see the ends of their toes poking out from under their belly will relate to this - what fun it is to reminisce. Fantastic instrumental work (8/10)
DANCING IN THE DARK - Another tale of frustration, this time set to a powerful, lively tune (8/10)
MY HOMETOWN - A nostalgic account of life in a different (better?) era. A thought-provoking end to the album (6/10)
In summary, an album that can make you feel happy, depressed, pensive, proud, nostalgic and regretful all in equal measure. Something for every mood.

that made his name worldwide.
Bornin the U.S.A. was released in 1984 and is, apparently, one of the biggest selling albums of all time. It is considered the antithesis of Springsteen?s work of the previous ten years in that this album is more a celebration than the angry, young man pieces of his earlier work. I remember when the album came out way back in yesteryear and at the time I was not actually impressed by Mr Springsteen at all. So I never bought it and have never actually heard it either. So today is the day 18 years after it first came out that I get my first introduction to Mr BruceSpringsteen. So everybody take a chair or grab a pew. Sit down, relax and enjoy (hopefully) the music.

Advantages: brilliant lyrics and music Disadvantages: none
This is by far the best album that BruceSpringsteen has released. it has probably the best song he has ever sung on it, BornIn The USA. It also has other great songs including Cover Me, Darlington County, Working On The Highway, Glory Days and My Hometown.
The inset has a full list of lyrics which can come in handy when having a sing along!
I bought this album more than 2 years ago and on a recent plane journey I listened to it all the way through twice.
If you haven't already got a CD by BruceSpringsteen, this is the one to get as some other CDs by him have some dodgy songs on.
The CD is flawless and if he can continue to churn out hits like BornIn The USA he could be huge in the UK. ...
The title's actually "Bornin the USA" of course. Not the US, as it says in the opinion heading.
When this album first came out, I played it non-stop, and was convinced it was as good as ?Born to Run?, Springsteen?s original tour-de-force album. I went to see him twice in concert that Summer, and one of my enduring memories is walking alongside the traffic in the streets afterwards, with the sound of a song from the ?Bornin the USA? album blaring out from every other car. I felt like I was really part of something.
Playing the album today, when it starts with the anthemic ?Bornin the USA?, I no longer feel quite the same, mainly because that particular song is not one of my favourites. It?s good, but perhaps a bit too bombastic. I know that Bruce never intended it to be seen as a gung ho America-is-wonderful song, and it ...

Album Notes
Personnel: Bruce Springsteen (vocals, guitar); Steve Van Zandt (acoustic guitar, mandolin, background vocals); Clarence Clemons (saxophone, percussion, background vocals); Danny Federici (piano, organ, glockenspiel); Roy Bittan (piano, synthesizer, background vocals); Garry Tallent (bass, background vocals); Max Weinberg (drums, background vocals); La Bamba, Ruth Jackson (background vocals). Producers: Bruce Springsteen, Jon Landau, Chuck Plotkin, Steve Van Zandt. Recorded at The Power Station and The Hit Factory, New York, New York. It's almost hard to believe now that for much of his career Bruce Springsteen was a gigantic cult artist; a musician who could sell a couple of million records and fill hockey rinks, but who was was no more likely than Elvis Costello to get airplay on pop radio. BORN IN THE USA was the album on which he flexed his muscles (literally) and changed all that. With song titles and choruses that seemed to reflect all that was good and strong in America, belying songs that were about everything that was going wrong, BORN IN THE USA was one of those cultural events that resonated with just about everybody--from both Republican and Democratic politicians, to Vietnam veterans (the title-track was a brutal account of a vet's homecoming), to social critics who found layers of meaning in these tales of disillusioned America, to dance-music DJs who found palpable beats in the dark passions of "Dancing In The Dark" and "Cover Me," to fist-raising pop fans who turned seven of these songs into top-10 singles and kept BORN IN THE USA in a year-long battle for the top spot on the album chart. It was as if no other album mattered that year. Musically, BORN IN THE USA was as lean and muscular as Springsteen himself, trading in the E Street Band's over-the-top saxophone-and-piano sound of old for a sleeker, forward-driving guitar-and-synthesizer feel (foreshadowing a future in which long-time sax sidekick Clarence Clemons would be gone, and mild-mannered pianist/synth-player Roy Bittan would emerge as a full-blown collaborator). Continuing in the vein of NEBRASKA, the songs were plainspoken, folk-derived tunes, although this time they leapt into big, sing-along choruses. And, seemingly, the whole world sang along.
