Advantages: Tense, atmospheric, compellingly written Disadvantages: Dialogue feels slightly stuffy in places
In John Wyndham's 1951 novel 'Day of The Triffids', main protagonist Bill Masen awakes in a London hospital to find that his eyes are heavily bandaged and nobody appears to be around to attend to him. Tentatively removing his bandages and discovering that he is still able to see, Masen quickly discovers that the hospital is deserted and some terrible catastrophe appears to have occured, with the city in a state of abject chaos.
Everyone appears to be blind, with some people choosing to drink themselves into oblivion in the numerous pubs throughout the city, whist others cling to one another in an attempt to find food and somehow remain alive. Masen remembers the radio reports about strange cosmic phenomena in the sky that played out during the weeks he was incapacitated in the hospital, and it soon becomes apparent that watching ...

feel, yet still providing solid drum and bass rhythm, and catchy choruses, with vocal harmonies from Simon, John and Andy which had previously seen them likened to The Beatles.
The album also saw them depart from producer Colin Thurston, and enlist the help of Ian Little and Alex Sadkin to produce this album.
Andy Hamilton, who played saxophone on 'Rio' also appears again on this album.
The album was remastered and re-released in 2003, however it is not a limitededition as stated above in the title here, it is simply remastered.
The tracks :-
1. THE REFLEX - this the opening track was released as a single and shot straight to the top of the charts, giving the band their second number one single. The single version which was released, however, is different to the album version, as it was remixed by Nile Rodgers, and contains the memorable ...
changed the whole story around, and it differs greatly from the novel.
The Day Of The Triffids is a classic that even schools have on their reading lists, and it comes as no surprise that someone decided to do a sequel. Simon Clark's The Night Of The Triffids, authorised by the Wyndham estate, takes up the story where The Day Of The Triffids leaves off, beginning 30 years later. David Masen, son of Bill, the origian book character, takes over as the story's protagonist and narrator.
The jacket blurb describes The Day of the Triffids as, "the first and definitive great disaster novel" and I guess along with, "The War of the Worlds" this must be true. This is one of the most remembered books I have read, and one I have read many times too. It has never lost it's edge, a great story. If you have never read this, try it. This is one that ...

Album Notes
Includes 9 bonus tracks. Recorded just after the 1980s Australian indie rock band had relocated to London from its native Perth, this 1986 release was much of the world's first introduction to the Triffids' broodingly atmospheric sound. Alternating between the shimmering, lovely '80s pop of "Chicken Killer" and the experimentalism of the mysterious "Tarrilup Bridge," the album also conjures the band's contemporary countryman Nick Cave on songs like the dark ballad "Life of Crime," while the cavernous "Stolen Property" and the country-tinged "Tender Is the Night" remain timeless classics.
Album Reviews
Q (p.127) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Hugely underrated, head Triffid David MacComb was equally capable writing the diet-pilled trucker cyclone 'Lonely Stretch' or the wistful 'Wide Open Road', a eulogy for a relationship that's run its course." Mojo (p.120) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[E]pic swarthiness, shambling sweetness and tense folk-blues." Magnet (p.89) - "David McComb's vocals bear a strong resemblance to Nick Cave's, but his heartwrenching songs, straight from desolation row, take a back seat to no one."
