I have removed my original first paragraph about how this is my least favourite Pixies album, as after listening to it for an extended period of time, I have grown to love it as much as their other albums. It's one of those that takes some listening to. Anyway...
Bossanova is the quietest of the Pixies albums. It is much more thoughtful and subdued than anything else they have done. There usual style consists of quiet verse, into a heavy chorus, whereas on this album there's not as much of the heaviness as there is peace. I suppose the overall style of the Pixies music is rock/grunge with thought. Bossanova stands, however, between two great albums, Doolittle before it and Trompe Le Monde after, and could be seen as the interim between the two. Doolittle is a more grungesque album, while Trompe Le Monde is rock. Bossanova lies somewhere bewteen.
Many of the tracks seem to fade into each other on this album, but there are still some outstanding efforts. 'Velouria' is probably the most popular song on the album, due to it's huge riffs and heavy movement. 'Dig for Fire' is a more chilled and tuneful song, with both those two earning a place on 'Death to the Pixies', the best of album. Other noteable songs include 'Havelina', 'Stormy Weather', and 'Ana'. Each track on the album has its own special quality to bring to it. It may just take you a while to get into the swing of it... persist though, it's worth it.
All in all, Bossanova is a good album, and i certainly recommend it, but don't buy it before you have rest of the back catalogue.

I don't know how you could have ever not thought this was an outstanding album. The Pixies rule and i feel that, as you probably did when you said it was your least favourite, that the worst Pixies album is still awesome by comparison. I don't know about your rock/grunge classification, i know it's that whole grunge era but i feel alternative rock really sums them up. They are one of those bands that don't fit a category (Tool etc.)
I personally love this album and with songs like "dig for fire" "Velouria" "ana"(surfs up dude) and "cecilia Ann" how could i not. Also, i feel that the reason people can identify with this album less is because it is the "Mellon Collie..." of the Pixies. Different, yet explosively unique/brilliant.
