3 – Everyday – This track could quite easily be the best track on the album. A great piano intro leads into the song. Only slightly faster than the last track, this song is a cracker with keyboards leading the music, aided by the piano, bass and calm drums. Phil’s voice provides calm delivery of some great lyrics. – 9/10

An interesting collection of tracks make up this album. The majority of tracks are slow, with a few being more upbeat. This album isn’t a happy album, mainly due to the fact that it was written at around about the same time as Phil Collins’ marriage ended.
It is evident that Phil has spent a lot of time on this album and that he is one of a very small amount of artists who like their music to be perfect. Every instrument you hear has been played by Phil, which shows how fluent he is in different types of instrument.
THE TRACKS
There are 11 tracks on this one disc album. Most have a similar theme to another, that being the standard combination of love and life which we come to expect from Phil Collins.
1 – Both Sides Of The Story – An upbeat opener to the album with the trademark Phil Collins drums, this is not a bad song. The lyrics are interesting and thought provoking, the instruments sound fresh. – 7/10
2 – Can’t Turn Back The Years – A slow song, this is a calm track. The bass continues throughout with the odd interlude of a keyboard. Phil’s voice brings the whole song to a sense of being complete. The lyrics are, again, thought provoking and this song is definitely one of my favourites from this album. – 7/10
4 – I’ve Forgotten Everything – This is the slowest song on the album. Instrumentally, there’s nothing special going on, with only a keyboard, bass and very slow drum rhythm present. Once again, Phil’s voice is calm and even sad. Lyrically, this isn’t a bad song. – 6/10
5 – We’re Sons Of Our Fathers – The tempo rises for this song which isn’t one of my favourites. The intro of the song isn’t the best, but the song does improve instrumentally as the song progresses. Pianos, keyboards and bass make up most of the song, with the odd bit of a banjo appearing. Phil’s voice is as good as ever and the lyrics are alright but nothing spectacular. – 5/10
6 – Can’t Find My Way – A drum riff introduces us to this song. Again, this song is primarily built up with the bass, keyboards and drums. Phil’s voice is ever calm, and provides us with some interesting lyrics. This track is another favourite of mine. – 7/10
7 – Survivors – Another drum intro, this is a more upbeat song. The lyrics are more positive than most of the rest of the album and are interesting. Good keyboard, bass, guitar and drum work coincides with Phil’s soothing voice. A good song. – 8/10
8 – We Fly So Close – This is without doubt my favourite song on this album, mainly due to the beautiful and memorable guitar riff. This song is fairly similar to “In The Air Tonight” as far as the percussion is concerned, not to mention the haunting electric guitar strumming that occurs on occasions in the background. Beautiful lyrics are delivered wonderfully and calmly by Phil. A sad but wonderful song. – 9/10
9 – There’s A Place For Us – Another slow one with yet more keyboards and bass. The lyrics are interesting and Phil sings them in a calm way. An interesting, good song but nothing special – 7/10
10 – We Wait And We Wonder – A bagpipe intro leads into drums which then leads into the rest of the song. Guitars, bass, keyboards, bagpipes and drums make up this faster tune. The lyrics are thought provoking and Phil’s voice takes more of a Genesis-like-tone, being more forceful in his delivery of the words. – 7/10
11 – Please Come Out Tonight – Keyboards, bass and drums make up the finale of the album. Phil’s voice is, once again, calm (I must have said that about 15 times now!), and gives us some lyrics that are nice, but nothing special. 8/10
OVERALL
This album is great if you like mellow, calming music or Phil Collins (or both!). The price of £5.99 is a good deal. I wouldn’t pay much more than that for this album. On the whole, this album is a good collection of tracks, with only a few bringing down its rating.
Advantages: Phil plays every instrument! Disadvantages: A little dark and moody
...and even the title track, Both Sides of the Story are nothing particularly special.
However, overall the album works well. The sum of the parts make up what this album is all about. No individual song is outstanding (except for Everyday), but together they make quite a powerful album. ...

Advantages: Very relaxing and atmospheric Disadvantages: Maybe lacks a little variety
Phil Collins must be one of the most talented and respected people in the music business. I hadn't heard much of his music before except some of the material he recorded when with Genesis. I didn't expect what I got from this album. Its got a few good songs on it but the problem is that they do sound a bit similar. I don't really find this too much of a bothe rbut some people would. Theres a good deal of listening in the cd. Can't Turn Back the Years ... ...but only a couple of the 11 tracks aren't worth listening to. The lyrics are great. All the songs deal wiht either a story or a principle so even if you don't like the music it is interesting to listen to the words. Most songs take a little while to kick in and when they do its great. The effetcs on the keyboard really add to the whole sound of the music and the drumming just tops it off. Another thing I really like about this album is that Phil ...

going", it was produced by Phil in 1982 ( i was only 7 lol ). I got all his solo albums, i could have chosen any of them, but those days, its my favourite one ;)
It contains 10 songs :
1) I don't care anymore
2) I cannot believe it's true
3) Like China
4) Do you know do you care ?
5) You can't hurry love
6) It don't matter to me
7) Thru these walls
8) Don't let him steal your heart away
9) The west side ( instrumental, very wellknown here, coz it was used for an advert )
10) Why can't it wait til morning
The incredible sound of this album is probably due to the genesis influence although it's a solo album, the second one :)
I saw philcollins in France, Paris bercy, on 09/12/1994, for the bothsides tour, it was the most beautiful day in my whole life, I know it looks stupid to say that, but, PhilCollins is really ...

Album Notes
Solo performer: Phil Collins (vocals, various instruments). Includes liner notes by Phil Collins. BOTH SIDES was recorded at Phil Collins' 12-track home studio. All four of Phil Collins' '80s albums were enormous commercial successes, with a plethora of hit singles and videos. However, by 1993, when his first post-Genesis solo album, BOTH SIDES, was released, there had been a few major shifts in popular music, and it was the first of Collins' solo records not to see much in the way of chart action. This was not unexpected, but it's rather a shame, since the album continues the more mature, low-key sound first developed on 1993's BUT SERIOUSLY. Less somber than that album but still maintaining its quiet grace, BOTH SIDES is filled with solidly composed, well-played (Collins plays all the instruments, for the first time since 1981's FACE VALUE), and melodically rich songs. Collins' lyrics delve further into the social commentary arena than even those on BUT SERIOUSLY, and perhaps it's the relative lack of characteristic love songs that accounted for the album's lack of commercial success, but this is an album which deserved better than it got.
Album Reviews
Musician (12/93, p.90) - "...BOTH SIDES eschews the glib pop cheer of Collins' most radio-friendly work in favor of a lean, low-key sound...it may not be his most obvious and accessible album, but it's definately among his most satisfying...." Q (12/93, p.108) - 3 Stars - Good - "...Most of BOTH SIDES' melancholy yet seductive ruminations eyeball the uncertainties of relationships with an appealingly ruthless sympathy..."
