Additional notes
Album Notes: A compendium of famous British comedy names from the period in and around World War Two, this four-CD box set features sketches and songs by the likes of Max Miller, whose double entendres were the bane of the straight-laced BBC, Stanley Holloway, who later starred in the film version of MY FAIR LADY, and of course the dryly acerbic, quintessentially English Noel Coward. Though some of these routines will be incomprehensible to 21st- century ears, others, like Coward's "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" and Norman Long's "On the Day That Chelsea Went and Won the Cup" have weathered the years remarkably well, and comedians like Tommy Handley and Arthur Askey played a vital role in keeping Britons' spirits up during the darkest hours of the war.
