Each song is a cunning short story that wraps itself around you like a cosy couch throw. The loose theme running through this 12-song reverie is seduction. It plays out in both the drowsy sexual hopes of principal songwriter Stuart Murdoch's idle protagonists and the giddiness of bandmate Stevie Jackson's "Seymour Stein" and "Chickfactor", which document his bewitchment by the city of New York, its beautiful girls and florid pitchmen. The complex arrangements favour a whimsical diversity best experienced in "Sleep the Clock Around", which features synthesiser bloops, trumpets and bagpipes! If you haven't figured out that this Scottish eight-piece deserves every iota of hype it's receiving, it's time to have your ears checked and your record collection gone over by a certified professional. --Lois Maffeo

Feeling Sinisterwith an album that is, unbelievably, even better. The Boy with the Arab Strapis an immediately infectious and delicious pastiche of fey, Nick Drake-ian vocals; lilting pop melodies; shimmery arrangements; croony wonder; and tortured, lit-smart lyrics. Belle and Sebastian are smarter than the Smiths, wittier than the Beach Boys, more fun than the Velvet Underground, and even more inscrutable than R.E.M. That's heavy company, butThe Boy with the Arab Strapproves they deserve to be belles of the ball.--Tod Nelson

Before l review the actual album l suppose l better tell you about Belle and Sebastian because if you were anything like me until recently you probably don’t know either who they are or very little about them.
Their name comes from “Belle Et Sebastien” a novel by Madame Cecile Aubry. Its about a little boy called Sebastien and his Pyreenes mountain dog called Belle. The novel became a popular children’s TV show in France during the 1970s.
In 1998, Belle and Sebastian won the best newcomer award in the Brits. This was a public vote and they bet off the mighty Steps to win the alloclade – this was the first point l had heard of the group – they were virtually unheard off. Their win was dulled by the calls of vote rigging.
The band was formed in 1996 in an all night café in Glasgow, by Stuart Murdoch and the now departed (not dead though!) Stuart David. The band now compromise of 8 full time members including:

Although l had heard vaguely of the group l new nothing about them, but at a barbecue in the heady days of summer way back in June (do you remember it!!) l heard the album played at a friends house through a drunken stupor and something stuck – l had to text her on the following Monday to find out who they were.
I picked the album up in Our Price – they had an offer on 2 for twenty quid – not bad!
TRACK 1 - It Could Have Been A Brilliant Career
I have three favourite tracks on the album and this is one of them – it’s a catchy wee number that will have you singing it all day long. Its softy melodic with guitar and keyboards accompanies the male lead vocal.
TRACK 2 – Sleep Around The Clock
A bit faster that the previous and it also is the second of my three favourite tracks. It’s a happy tune. Both male and female vocals – a good toe tapping tune.
TRACK 3 – Is It Wicked Not To Care?
A female lead vocal this time. A ballad, a folksy tune. It seems to be accompanied by both guitar and drums
TRACK 4 – Ease Your Feet In the Sea
Immediately on hearing the intro l think CHA CHA CHA!! Perhaps the vocals and stance of the track are a bit samey to that of the previous track.
TRACK 5 – A Summer Wasting
A soft piano track with male lead vocals. It’s a relaxing tune.
TRACK 6 – Seymour Stein
A haunting intro – which l begin to sway to as it begins. Another male lead vocal, - a slow ballad, chilling music
TRACK 7 – A Space Boy Dream
A lot different to all the other tracks – the spoke vocals are heard over the music – you hear a hypnotic Scottish male with a lilting accent.
TRACK 8 – Dirty Dream Number Two
A big happy tune, with trumpets, cymbals and drums. Again another male vocal.
TRACK 9 – The Boy With The Arab Strap
Obviously the title track for the album. A soft keyboard intro, hand clapping, head nodding – l don’t know the words but l hum along anyway – its bloody brilliant. This is my other favourite track if you hadn’t guessed already!
TRACK 10 – Chickfactor
A soft piano introduction, which makes me, sway. Hauntingly folksy vocals again.
TRACK 11 – Simple Things
A more rock guitar features on this track but again the vocals are still in that haunting melodic style as in the rest of the album.
TRACK 12 – The Rollercoaster Ride
Drums signal the introduction, with guitars and keyboards following – male vocals floating across the music.
OVERALL
Its Scottish, it has exquisite vocals, its folksy, its toe tapping, its finger clicking, and it’s an excellent album. Im sorry if the description was not technical for some but, l simply know what l like – l like songs with vocals and Belle and Sebastian really do give me what l want. I would recommend it to everyone – great for relaxing too, and fabulous for driving too!

...Difficulty with was ‘A space boy dream’, with a whole talking with repetitive music behind it that isn’t my thing, and a little self indulgent, though I’m sure some avant-garde types will love it. I don’t think that this is a great LP, however I think there’s about 5 great tracks on here and its combination between rousing, humorous, feel good pop songs and darker acoustic numbers make it a well balanced, pleasant experience. It’s definitely worth a look. I think Jack Black in High Fidelity put it best – ‘Sad b*stard music’, I don’t know about you but I am a sad b*stard. However the ...

Advantages: great lyrics Disadvantages: a bit slow for most
The Boy with the Arab Strap is the Belle & Sebastian album famous for winning a Brit over the like of 5ive in the best newcomers award, it did this by it’s fan dedication and use of e-mail votes. It was in all respects a RESULT and just reward for what is an excellent album. The main feel is melanchonic, but there is incisive satire all across the album. The second half of the album dives more into electonica with a space boy dream, but overall the ...

Advantages: Some of the bands finest material to date Disadvantages: Let down my an equal measure of some of their worst
‘Fold your hands child…’ is the fourth album from the Scottish collective Belle and Sebastian and the first since the break through success of ‘The Boy with the ArabStrap’, which saw them move away from the cult status awarded by their first two albums and move towards mainstream success. Oh and cause controversy by stealing the Best Newcomer award from under the noses of Steps, shame that.
Having thoroughly enjoyed their earlier material I eagerly awaited this album and inevitably bought it on the first day of release. The preceding single ‘Legal Man’ (not featured here) was a slick sounding piece of 60s influenced pop and heightened my expectations, so perhaps it was inevitable that the album would be slightly disappointing.
Opening track, ‘I fought in a War’ is however ...

Belle and Sebastian includes: Stuart Murdoch, Stuart David, Isobel Campbell, Stevie Jackson. Additional personnel: Gail Anderson, Claire Campbell, Eilidh Campbell, Euan Forrester, David D. MacKay, Sarah Wilson (strings); Ian MacKay (pipes); Neil Robertson (bass). After 1997's IF YOU'RE FEELING SINISTER made them critics' darlings, Scottish octet Belle And Sebastian ran straight into a series of label woes, and into the inevitable feeding frenzy that surrounds a free agent with their prodigious talents. Their experience with one label exec is detailed in "Seymour Stein" on THE BOY WITH THE ARAB STRAP, which finds the band building on the pastoral pop charms of SINISTER, adding a palpable layer of anger and an increasingly rich sonic palette to their painfully shy tales of despair. Near-overnight success taught the band a lot. This album moves from their trademark confessional diary sketches (still in abundance, as on the disarmingly naive "Is It Wicked Not To Care," and the tender "Rollercoaster Ride") to genuine social criticism, as on the title track, a narrative meditation on Britain's pretensions and societal ills. "Chickfactor" pulls apart the banality the band encountered on arrival in New York, an experience which only served to deepen the bashful anger that makes Belle and Sebastian so endearing.

Q (12/99, p.100) - Included in Q Magazine's "90 Best Albums Of The 1990s." Rolling Stone (9/17/98, pp.96-98) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...naive and fragile on the outside, tough with knowledge of obscure psychedelic pop records on the inside....the soundtrack to staying too long in your college neighborhood and becoming one of those types who hold down library jobs..." Spin (10/98, p.140) - 8 (out of 10) - "...this...is a pastoral album whose minor accomplishments add up to tremendous power when heard as a whole. Murdoch and his disciples...refuse to do anything in broad strokes, which means nothing here wears out over repeated listenings, but that you also have to lean into the album to get much out of it..." Entertainment Weekly (9/11/98, p.132) - "...Murdoch can apparently make a witty yet heartfelt song of anything that crosses his mind, from a dirty dream...to turning down a record executive's invitation to dinner..." - Rating: A-
