So, you think (for a minute for a minute or two) of the ordinary boys, and what comes to mind? Most probably Preston's appearance in Big Brother, Chantelle and shady sunglasses accompanied by a fast tempo ska track entitled 'Boys will be boys'. And that is the sole track that most people can name; I suppose that they could be classed as a sort of modern 'one hit wonder', although they are still going, so who wonder what will happen?...

What probably doesn't come to mind is a fast album of down to earth ska album with cult musical ideas, such as mixing ska with rap and with numerous brilliant tracks.

For me, and for any true ordinary boys fan, the latter shall come to mind.

Boys will be boys got to about number fourty in the charts and was almost unheard of before Prestons big appearance in Big Brother; now everyone has heard it and it is nationally recognised as a truly great ska track, fast, straight in there, with a good, fast tempo and a continuous beat, finishing off with a hint of, and I know it sounds bizarre, ska - like rap...and it really goes well!

But boys will be boys; their sole single; is not the only groundbreaking track on the album. Every track, with no exception, has a brilliant unforgettable beat and riff. The vocals on the whole album (Preston) are of extremely high quality. Life will be the death of me and brassbound are two other brilliant tracks, Brassbound starting off the album in a truly cult, unique style only to that of the ordinary boys, as it starts of piano solo notes, then it builds up and builds up...

The album I feel has a touch of reggae, and the album has quite a retroistic cover, with a red on yellow with black colour scheme and also a set symbol, like a five - leaved clover with points on.

The drumming throughout every track of the album is consistent in producing a continuous rhythm, and that is all part of their style - simply superb, and creating a rather 'retro' feel.

This album is a cross between The Madness, Morrisey, The Smiths, The Kaiser Cheifs and Franz Ferdinand, all in different aspects of the album, maybe not as much the latter two.

All of the albums 'tail end' is very good too, there are some cracking tracks down at the bottom of the list, most noticably A few home Truths and red letter day, not deserving bottom spot!

Play.com prices the album at £6.99 delivered, which I think is very good value. It is currently in stock.

Track list -

Brassbound
Boys Will Be Boys
Life Will Be The Death Of Me
Thanks To The Girl
On An Island
One Step Forward
Skull And Bones
Don't Live Too Fast
Call To Arms
A Few Home Truths
Rudi's In Love
Red Letter Day

A brilliant album, although a lot of the hype is based on that one track.

Brassbound - ****
Boys will be boys - *****

Enjoy!

I heard they were a manufactured band, of course my sources could be wrong. I just don't think they have credibility. Good review, tough. x
