Well I first learned of "The Bravery" when I checked out a copy of "Rip and Burn" at Asda one early morning and thought "are these guys for real?" or words to that effect. I thought it was an initial Ramones meets A Flock of Seagulls with Oasis and The Clash thrown in. As usual I dismissed The Bravery out of hand-without a second thought.
Now the saying goes-"Don't judge a book by it's cover".
And a modification should be "Don't judge a band by a magazine cover"
After hearing one of their tracks on Radio 1 "Fearless", I was forced to re-evaluate my hasty decision and charged out to HMV and paid £9.99 for the album as I was on my dinner break and couldn't wait to listen it.
Well the Bravery are a New York based band who have a very Eighties style to them with some rock thrown in-so possibly a new catergory of music
has come about called "Electro-Rock"
This is a band at the beginning of their career and I haven't been so excited with what was to me a hitherto unknown act ever. That is no exaggeration!
JOHN CONWAY-Synthesisers,programming,backing vocals
MIKE H-Bass guitar,backing vocals
ANTHONY BURULCICH-Drums,backing vocals.
If none of those names meant anything to you then they meant nothing to me either before checking out this album.
But I now believe that the Bravery are going to be a MASSIVE hit and these gents are going to be household names.
Anyway the tracks are as follows:
AN HONEST MISTAKE-A New Order feel to start the album. Fast paced keyboards with nice bassy beat. Cracking opener.
NO BRAKES-Keyboard based with a little guitar work. One of the weaker tracks, not bad in absolute terms but somewhat overshadowed by the rest of the album
FEARLESS-I thought I was in a church to start off but what a superb track. This is the start of the more more rock orientated part of the album, and what provoked me to puchased. High energy beat-excellent!
TYRANT-Slow start reminding me a of " Your Blue Room" by U2, slow by the rest of the album standards but an excellent effort. Bitterness-a-plenty in this though, not for relaxation!
GIVE IN-Faster, heavier feel-a total contrast to the opening track. Goes to show the variety available.
SWOLLEN SUMMER-Heavy rock-almost! ?Great guitar work complimented with every band member getting on the act. Something for almost everyone here!
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNEMENT-Drum based with the guitars and keyboards taking a back seat here . Again not bad but one of the two weakest links- Goodbye!
OUT OF LINE-Back to keyboards on this one shines after the disappointing previous track.
UNCONDITIONAL-The Bravery's debut single-a defining track fast paced rock with an emphasis on keyboards
THE RING SONG-Slower paced with more emphasis on the vocals. Rather average.
RITES OF SPRING-Back to form here with an almost psychedelic feel. Tight arrangement with some delightful guitar work.
HOT PURSUIT-Described as a bonus track on the album a fairly confused yet likeable track.. Grows on you!
Well that sums up the Bravery-the most exciting debut album from a virtually unknown act I've come across in years. In all honesty, I thought the music industry had given up on such acts rather being content to sample well known hits and get somebody to talk over them-GRRR!
I hold out great hope for them. They've got undoubted ability, style,a high dose of originality being able to fuse two distinct and quite different types of music and they are hungry. I'm delighted to see these lads touring-getting the music out to their fans live which is what it should all be about .
Apart from a couple of weakish tracks mentioned above, there is very little to criticise on this album. Musically in my opinion it's as good as it gets.
If i had one real criticism it would be the inside photo's.They look as if they've been taken by a cameraphone, and a poor one at that. Some may argue that's the intention but it just doesn't appeal.
I could recommend this album for somebody fed up with the majority of chart material or who wants to be in at the start of something big.
Buy and Enjoy.
Just don't get fooled by that magazine cover!

Like their fellow New Yorkers The Strokes, The Bravery recycle the music of their youth ... more
and add a modern sensibility (as well as a pin-up swagger). But whereas The Strokes focussed on the guitar-rock of the Velvet Underground and Television, The Braver...

Review of Bravery, The - Bravery
Advantages: 'Honest Mistake' is okay... only because it's one step away from being a Duran Duran song Disadvantages: Empty, lifeless, boring, vapid, mediocre, insincere, dull, flimsy
