Advantages: Good mixture of styles Disadvantages: Occasionally repetitive, sometimes can sound too familiar
Although my main joy is in older music, I do enjoy listening and discovering new bands (even more so if barely anybody else knows of them). The Bravery is one of the newest bands on the block. Their style has been described as ‘post punk-influenced dance rock’. They have been dubbed by MTV and Rolling Stone magazine as artists to watch.

The Bravery have co-headlined a US tour with Ash (and they are still doing so for another month) which coincided with the release of their self-titled debut album.

THE TRACKS
1 – An Honest Mistake – This is the track that introduced me to The Bravery and it’s also my favourite due to its catchy nature. A combination of previous artists comes into mind with this track, including New Order and Blondie. Excellent use of guitars and keyboards make this a brilliant song musically, and I just love the distorted/reverbed sound that is produced by these instruments. A great drumbeat combines with nice bass work and Sam sings the lyrics well. This is their most recent single (February 2005) so it should be recognisable. – 10/10
2 – No Brakes – Sounding familiarly like U2, this is another song with good rhythm. The keyboards are less noticeable but the guitars a still just as good as before. Sam’s singing is interesting but good. – 8/10
3 – Fearless – John’s keyboards return for this song. He and the rest of the gang have managed to produce an interesting song that can be traced as far back as the Killers in style. There’s a guitar solo about halfway through which sounds slightly like an Oasis guitar solo. This isn’t a great song, but it’s good. – 7/10
4 – Tyrant – Combinations of a synthesizer and an organ (sounding instrument) introduce us to this slower (but not much) song. Sam produces much higher notes this time round and it does feel like he’s singing from his heart. The guitars aren’t as present as they were in the last few songs until about three quarters a way through the song when they do a solo. – 7/10
5 – Give In – This is a catchy song but can get a bit repetitive. That’s not to say it’s bad. It’s got a nice sound to it and could (arguably) be influenced by some U2 stuff. The drums seem to take a more important role in this song, with the guitars almost supporting them. The keyboards and bass add more depth to the song. – 8/10
6 – Swollen Summer – The guitars return to the fore-front again for this fast-paced song. The drums are loud, the guitar is loud and the singing is loud, the keyboards support. This is a really catchy tune that doesn’t get repetitive as quickly as the previous track. A nice 80’s rock style with drumming that sounds similar to some Muse songs. – 9/10
7 – Public Service Announcement – The bass takes a more prominent role in this track, introducing us to this song along with a good drumbeat. The guitars are more background and the keyboards are only noticeable in a melody after the chorus. Sam’s singing isn’t at its best, with some weird notes coming out. This song really does have a Blondie sound to it. – 9/10
8 – Out Of Line – A song with a sound of The Killers and some older bands. The chorus is really catchy and all of the instruments play a vital part of the music. There’s an interesting guitar solo near the end. Great stuff. – 9/10
9 – Unconditional – This was their first release, back in November of 2004. A combination of Killers and U2 give us this song. This is a pretty good song with great guitar work and more distortion/reverbing of the keyboards. The bass plays an important role here, as do the drums. Sam’s singing sounds similar to that of the first track. – 8/10
10 – The Ring Song – This song has a really electro intro to it and, compared to the last track, sounds much calmer. It’s a good, up-beat song with nice sounding bass. The guitars are more supporting than anything else. – 7/10
11 – Rites Of Spring – Powerful drums and guitars introduce us to this song. The keyboard work is very good as a support and that familiar guitar sound that can now be dubbed “Bravery style guitars” is ever-present. The bass isn’t as evident but is still just as good. – 7/10
12 – Hot Pursuit (Bonus Track) – As it’s a bonus track, I’ll let you discover this one for yourselves. It features a lot of synths. – 9/10
COVER
I love the design of the album cover. It's nice and original and also quite interesting to look at. It's also instantly recognisable too.
OVERALL
Many say that The Bravery are like The Killers, and in some cases, they are right. That is not a reason to right them off and, although there are some weaker tracks on this album, they have enough talent to give them several more albums. This is a good album.
Advantages: Catchy, upbeat, semi-nostalgic. Disadvantages: Some tracks are a little dull.
...so Robert Smith; in The Bravery, the influence of previous bands shows, but this comes across in a way that is definitely inspiration rather than imitation.
I love the flashback style of this album, as it feels familiar yet new, which is a comfortable, happy mix. I like the openings and the band are good at composing their songs. There are some strange moments on the album that I'm not quite sure how I feel about. For example, the opening of Out ... ...second. It's not the best song here, but tolerable, and another thing i found unusual was the church organ-like opening in 'Tyrant', which then continued into a musicical background that reminds me of a techno remix of the clattering of train tracks. By the end of the album, I can safely say songs such as 'Rites Of Spring' carry the Bravery's signature style, though this is one of those average tracks, and the final track, Hot Persuit, rounds the ...

Advantages: If you like the Killers you'll like this Disadvantages: If you dont like the Killers you wont lol!
The Bravery are being heralded as the next big thing. They are also being heralded as The Killers Mark II so do they offer anything different?
From the opener (current single) ‘An Honest Mistake’ you get the electro pulses that Suede or Blondie would be proud of. I love this song. Yes ok so it’s very Killers but they in themselves are genius. I really go like the mix of electro synths and vocals with rock/indie guitars and beats. Blondie should ... ...is apparently about post 9/11 the bands lead singers bird cheating on him thinking the world was gonna end… hmmmm ok! Good tune though!
More indie sounding ‘No Brakes’ has a U2 and Red Hot Chilli Peppers feel. Its retro in the simple 60’s beat that runs through through the whole song! This song lacks electro of before but makes up for it in other ways, its very melodic in places andhas a ‘live’ feel to it as its quite raw and not over produced. ...

So Indie Britain (perhaps even Mainstream Britain) are in the midst of a love affair with Mr Flowers et al. And Casablancas and co. are back in the studio and only (reportedly) five weeks away from completing their much anticipated third album. So how dare these quiffed, kohl-eyed upstarts charge in and upset the momentum!
But, that's The Bravery all over. Bigged-up by the music press and hailed as the new Indie darlings in late 2004, The Bravery ... ...surrounding them is true! And if you choose to disagree, they'll see you outside, round the back, sharpish! A classic case of 'all mouth, no trousers' then?
While this eponymous debut is never going to be hailed as one of rocks' finest first offerings, it certainly gives the current competition a run for its money. Let's be clear - nothing on this album will set you on fire like say the first time you heard 'Last Nite' or the elation you feel when ...

Advantages: Consistently Quality, good vocals, good guitar work Disadvantages: Killers tribute band?
Sorry to use the pun but in my view the album lack's bravery. No hot fuss, but It could be the killers second (not quite as good) album if it had been released next year. That's not all bad though, it lacks originality, it makes up for it in quality, Honest mistake is the biggest song on there although it's a touch poptastic for my tastes, Unconditional and hot pursuit however are the two best songs to be released this year bar none. Better than ... ...the silver limited edition one, purely because it'ss seperate you from all the basndwagon jumpers that buty thiis after Unconditional has been released on the radio. Buy, buy, buy!
Ok then, Track by track
1. Honest Mistake - Current single, Think mr Brightside
2. No brakes - U2, Joshua Tree bass line, jingly jangly lead guitar, raw strokesish vocals.
3. Fearless - More up beat, heavy syntheisers catchy, Quality tune
4. Tyrant -Darker, slower, ...
