Advantages: breathtaking scenery, beautiful people, lots of fun.... Disadvantages: long, long bus journeys, quite expensive for a backpacker
huge inequalities in the distribution of wealth so as a wealthy tourist you will be a target. However, as long as you are sensible, and I believe, friendly and open to meeting people and getting to know them and their culture I think you should be fine.
Distances are long, though and this can eat into your time, there were so many more places we wanted to see, but just couldn't. A flight pass is essential unless you have all the time in the world.
