Advantages: Fasinating experience Disadvantages: Not for the Niave
\"Mister\" I look down, and there is a young boy, no older than 6 or 7, with big brown eyes, and messy hair, dressed in blue shorts, a ripped Bucks Fizz T Shirt, barefooted, arms outstretched, hands cupped, begging for money.
Accross the street, a business man smokes his Cigar and laughs with a colleague, both dressed in suits, better placed in saville row, rather than this dusty street.
This is Brazil, a land of culture, experience, scars, and dealers of all things not good.
Nothing is simple in my life.
Rich in aesthetics and adventure, the would be James Bond will have a field day slipping in and out of decadance and modern lux, to extreme poverty and crime.
Flying in to Aeroporto Galećo in Rio de Janeiro with Varig, Brazil\'s international airline from New York, I knew what to expect.
Rio is great, but, I dont ...
Advantages: breathtaking scenery, beautiful people, lots of fun.... Disadvantages: long, long bus journeys, quite expensive for a backpacker
We spent six weeks travelling around Brazil which was not nearly long enough, six months would have been more like it!
We travelled there from Argentina and our first stop was the world famous Iguazu Falls which were an amazing sight, as was the surrounding forest, although the Argentinian side of the falls has more wildlife and more places to explore. From here we travelled overnight to Sao Paulo by bus and arrived at 3am. We were quite apprehensive about going to Brazil from all we'd read and heard about crime, muggings and so on and being in such a huge city was quite daunting, especailly as our Portuguese was pretty appalling at that stage. However, we found people in the bus station were extremely friendly and helpful and were able to direct us to Chinatown via the subway system which was where we had chosen to stay, as it had ...

Advantages: Bizarre, dark, witty, crafted. Disadvantages: Confusing, twisted, hang on these are advantages too!
Brazil stands out from the usual crowd of self serving mass produced heartless Hollywood falderal and manages to provoke , entertain, move, amuse , astonish , delight and confuse all in the first five minutes, and then it proceeds to get better and better. You can probably tell already, I quite like this film, this is going to be a five star review and is going to contain a fair few superlatives, but the film really does deserve mine and your enthusiasm. It is a rare gem of celluloid fancy and this is why you need to watch it.
Its directed by the American ex-Monty Python member and one time animator of giant hedgehogs, Terry Gilliam, and anyone familiar with his other work (Jabberwocky, Twelve Monkeys, The Fisher King, Time Bandits, Baron Munchausen etc.) will recognise his perculiar flare for the visual and his dark humour, but as ...

Album Reviews
JazzTimes (7-8/95, p.110) - "...On YELE BRAZIL, an indomitable human spirit speaks loudly and in sensuous rhythmic patterns." Dirty Linen (4-5/96, p.95) - "...a collection of Afro-textured Brazilian sounds....Even within the seemingly confined genre of Brazilian music there are a vast array of sounds..." Option (7-8/95, p.146) - "...A number of tracks sample the sound called samba reggae, which marries the multi-drum pulse of the bloco sound with cool reggae and strong, hook-ladden chant melodies..." Jazziz (12/95, p.31) - "...a sumptuous survey of the Africa-rooted music of Bahia....With touches of reggae and rock, some of the contemporary cuts attain a pop sheen without defaulting on the earthy qualities that impart the funkiness that makes Bahian music so irresistible..."
