Shayne Ward was the 2nd winner of 'The X Factor' in 2005, and unlike some reality TV stars that have come from these talent shows, he is still going strong today and has remained popular in the UK. After winning the 2nd series, he went on to release his debut single 'That's My Goal' which went straight to No1 in the charts and stayed there for 4 weeks. In 2006 he released his first album 'Shayne Ward' which again went to No1. In 2007, Shayne released his 2nd album 'Breathless' which peaked at No2 in the charts, he has released three singles from this album, 'If That's Ok With You', 'No U Hang Up' and 'Breathless'. The 2nd album is far more grown up than his debut album and has a slightly more R'n'b sound to it.
No U Hang Up - This was the first single to be released from this album as a double A-side along with 'If That's Ok With You'. This song such an r'n'b feel to it, Shayne's vocals are very smooth throughout the track. The song itself is mid-tempo and has a good rhythm to it with a memorable chorus, 'We got that you hang up no you hang up kinda love'. It is a very good song and shows that Shayne has most definitely moved on from his first album which was pretty much full of ballads that he had covered.
Breathless - This is a really nice ballad and one of my favourite songs on the album. It was the second single to be released and it's not surprising to see why really. It's a strong song with a powerful
chorus, 'You leave me breathless, you're everything good in my life'. The lyrics however are a little cheesy in places, 'If we had babies they would have your eyes, I would fall deeper watching you give life'. But overall it is a really good song, and you should listen out for the really high notes he hits at the end of the song!
If That's Ok With You - This was the first single to be released alongside 'No U Hang Up'. It is a really summery song and one that you can dance to, as Shayhe shows us in the accompanying video! It has a very catchy chorus, one that you won't be able to get out of your head! It could probably do without the chipmunk style voices in places though that go 'If that's ok with you', although it does sound quite funny! Again, this is probably one of my favourites on the album.
Damaged - This track is quite possibly my favourite song on the whole album, and it would make such a good single! It has a really catchy chorus and is quite an upbeat song, 'I never thought that you would ever do that, everything we had is gone, you said you loved me, said you'd never leave me, maybe I just heard you wrong'. The song is about the end of a relationship that has left him feeling damaged because she had found someone else and moved on.
Stand By Your Side - This isn't one of my favourites on the album, but it isn't one I would skip. The song isn't a ballad as such but it has quite a slow pace to it which makes it seem a little boring in places. 'And if you fall, I will stand by your side, when you've got nowhere to run, baby I'm your place to hide'. This song isn't as catchy as the others on the album.
Until You - I really like this track, it's a mid-tempo song although starts off quite slow until the chorus kicks in, 'It feels like nobody ever knew me until you knew me, feels like nobody ever loved me until you loved me'. Again, this is song where he shows off how high his voice can go!
Some Tears Never Dry - This song is really upbeat, and has a really good beat to it in the background, he also manages to hit quite a lot of high notes during this song as well. Again, this is another song about a relationship going wrong. 'I don't wanna say goodbye, cause my heart couldn't take it, baby give me one more try'. This is another song that has quite an r'n'b feel to it. He has definitely moved on a lot since his debut album.
Melt The Snow - This is quite a slow paced song, although the pace does pick up when the chorus kicks in. It is a nice song with a good beat to it, 'But you should know, when it gets too cold, you're not alone, I'll melt the snow'. The song is about looking out for someone when things get too hard for them. I like this song, although it's not one of the strongest tracks on the album.
Tangled Up - This song is brilliant! It's a really upbeat song, almost a disco track in fact. It has such a memorable chorus that you will soon find yourself singing, 'I can't deny that it's true, you've got me tangled up in you'. This would be a brilliant song to dance to. You wouldn't usually expect this kind of song from Shayne, especially not if you have listened to his debut album...again, this song definitely proves that he has moved on in terms of his music. You would expect this kind of track from someone like George Michael...it's a fab song and definitely one of my favourites!
Just Be Good To Me - This is a cover version, but Shayne has done a good job of making it his own. 'People always talkin' bout your reputation, I don't care about other guys, just be good to me'. It's not really one of my favourites on the album, but it's not a bad track at all and is worth a listen.
U Got Me So - Now, this song is extremely different to any of his usual stuff. In fact if you heard this song on the radio without any introduction to who it is singing, then you would probably think it was Justin Timberlake...as this is definitely the kind of thing he would sing. Again, this is an r'n'b song with a really cool chorus, 'You got me so, so hooked on, every little thing you do has got me so, so turned on'. It's a really good song and I wouldn't be surprised if it is released as a single in the future.
You Make Me Wish - This song was originally going to be the first single although it was never actually released. It would still make a really good single though as it's another r'n'b song that would probably be quite popular. His vocals sound quite different on this one, and again it's quite similiar to Justin Timerlake's music. 'You make me wish that I didn't have a girlfriend, it's crazy so crazy the way your body's shakin''. The song is very fast paced and has a good beat to it.
Tell Him - This song is genius! It samples a Vivaldi piece at the beginning, which is quite random but very effective! It is such a brilliant song and is really fast paced to the extent that it makes it hard to pick up on the words to it. 'Hey I think it's time you be telling your boyfriend exactly what you and I've been doing, tell him, the end'. The song was actually written by Ryan Tedder from OneRepublic who has written some really great songs. Definitely one of the strongest songs on the album and one of the most unusual too!
Overall, this is a really brilliant album and I prefer it to his debut album and you can definitely tell that he has progressed and found a style that suits him now. There is a really good mix of different styles on this album, catchy pop songs, ballads and smooth r'n'b tracks. There is something for everything on this album so I would most definitely recommend it.
