"The Blues Brothers" began as an affectionate joke-cum-tribute to R&B music, and taken in ... more
that spirit it retained its entertainment value, even after this live album topped the charts, sold two million copies, and produced hit singles in "Rubber Biscuit" and "Soul Man". The guardians of popular music have always been entirely too reverent and humourless, however, and it wasn't long before they were levelling charges of rip-off against the Brothers and complaining that John Belushi couldn't sing as well as Otis Redding. So what? No one seems to have noticed that Belushi was as obsessive about citing his sources as Frank Sinatra is about naming his arrangers -- you'd have thought those critics would have appreciated the footnotes. The beneficiaries of Belushi's encomiums didn't mind the increased exposure or the renewed royalty checks ("I suggest you buy as many blues albums as you can", Belushi told the audience), and even today, what comes across in these performances is the sincerity of feeling -- that and some tasty playing from a top-notch band.--William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

Advantages: Showing what talent Belushi had Disadvantages: The fact that he threw away that talent not long after
The BluesBrothers is a car crash waiting to happen ? and when it does it lasts for a bout thirty minutes. To call the BluesBrothers ?epic? is probably a bit of an understatement; the film is a small story but told on a large canvas at top volume.
Belushi and Ackroyd are on fine deadpan form. Their characters need to raise cash for to help save an orphanage where they grew up. They decide to put on a blues show in order to raise the cash needed to save it. Somehow they get chased by redneck country singers, the police and the Illinois branch of the Nazis.
It?s a great silly movie and a must for all fans of Candy, Belushi, Ackroyd and blues music (which is it?s main influence, director Landis has always cited The BluesBrothers as a musical first, comedy second.)
The BluesBrothers has some great cameos from Steven Spielberg and James ...
Advantages: great soundtrack, very funny Disadvantages: none
I can't remember when I first saw this - after all it is quite old (1984). I remember I missed the first bit, but thought the rest of it was great - in fact I think it was on the end of a video of something else I had recorded. Years later I have seen the film several times and own my own DVD of it.
The story is based on two brothers - Jake (James Belushi) and Elwood (Dan Acykroyd) Blues. Jake has just been released from prison and Elwood has just picked him up.
Their first stop is the Penguin - in fact the Penguin is a nun. She tells them that the orphanage they grew up in is about to be closed down because it owes so much tax. The only way it can be saved is by raising the money - legally. There is only on answer - reform the BluesBrothers Band.
And so starts a bizzare series of adventures as our two heroes travel round ...
Advantages: Some good songs Disadvantages: Trying too hard to emulate the original
As a huge fan of the original "BluesBrothers" film, my heart sank when I heard they were planning on updating it. After all, remakes of classic films rarely go well, with the likes of "Alfie" and "The Italian Job" not faring too well in recent years. Admittedly, this was to be more of an updated version, possibly a tribute film in many ways, featuring many of the original cast, but the original was such a fun film, could that feeling be replicated, or was it a one off?
It is nearly twenty years from the last show, which began with Jake being released from prison and ended with the whole band in jail. This time it is Elwood who is just getting out of prison, this time to discover he is all alone, with his brother and his father figure having died whilst he was incarcerated. As before, his first thought is to visit the nun who raised ...
