Quick review of Brighter Beat, A - Malcolm Middleton
Malcolm Middleton is one half of now disbanded Scots indie scenesters, Arab Strap. His solo stuff, for those familiar with the former, is a completely different affair. Middleton sings in his broad west coast scots accent but the songs are more folkey and acoustic. They are also far more tuneful which may or may not be to everyone's taste.
Overall, it's an excellent album and it's nice to hear a Scotsman who doesn't put on a whiney half american accent (snow patrol) for a change.
Buy this if you'd like to hear some modern Scottish music or just a decent folk, indie album. I wouldn't imagine you'll be dissapointed. ...

Album Reviews
Q (p.115) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Malcolm Middleton advances unrepentantly with Arab Strap's gritty downbeat poetry." Uncut (p.86) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Arrangements range from scraped guitars to epic brass fanfares and, unusually for an album about loners, there's no misanthropy." Mojo (Publisher) (p.98) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "This is possibly the most optimistic album about depression ever made....Middleton has a prowess for scalding wit and melodies exuding both serenity and desolation like a sigh."
