Whippin’ Piccadilly is the funniest song you will have heard since the Bonzo Dogs – these guys are absolute class.
And the class carries on, with Make no Sound – much more solemn than W.P. and then 78 Stone Wobble – again more sensible. They really slow it down for Tijuana Lady, and then …BOOOM… “Get Myself Arrested” appears out of nowhere – and gets you jumping again.

Perhaps the best thing is that Gomez haven’t tried to be anybody – it’s their debut album – and they have done it just as they wanted to. And it’s brilliant.
When John Lee Hooker listened to this album it moved him to declare “I can’t find no serious defects” high praise from the big man of blues. Blues is probably the best genre to lump Gomez in, though they are to some extent a genre spanning band, though not as many as some. Standard blues you won’t find on this album, not even Hoochie Coochie Man or anything approaching a blues standard. Alternative blues perhaps, though don’t go thinking this is ... ...tracks like Tijuana Lady that just seem to float in on the breeze. Perhaps slacker blues would be the best way to describe Gomez’s unique sound; there’s certainly not many other bands with this sound, and that, along with the sheer quality of the songs, is why I like this album as much as I do. ...

this is a ground breaking album and one which has deservedly won the mercury award. it mixes so many diverse genres that the album continually moves between differetn stlyes of music, reinventing itself along the way. most strikingly this album features some excellent guitar work. there is a strong spanish influence heard in the nylon string guitar sound, this is at times classical but then moves into a more south american style - effortlessly. furthermore ...

Review of Bring It On - Gomez
Advantages: a few ok songs Disadvantages: the rest are not up to much
Maybe ths is just not my type of music but how the hell did they get the mecury music prize? They all sound like there in there 50's. It's dissapointing that the best tracks are the singles because they aren't realy all that good, maybe i just expected it to be better than this but i was very dissapointed. If you like your music a bit on the heavy side and meaningful then this definutly isn't for you. i expect you have to like gomez to like this ...

This is one of my favourite albums and Gomez are therefore one of my favourite bands. Their album, which came out in 1998, is very original, combing rhythm, blues, jazz and alternative rock. The lead singer Ian Ball has such and strong and unique voice it is truly amazing but he doesn’t hog the limelight as all the members have their turn to sing and all have superb voices. The album has a real feel good air about it, especially "whipping Piccadilly". ...

That is what makes Gomez so great, there is no other group quite like them and to their credit I don't think there ever will be. They are the saviours of the music scene of the millenium.COME ON, BRING IT ON. ...

Advantages: Some great songs Disadvantages: Overall not as good as Bring It On
Let me clear up one possible confusion. The Gomez album BringIt On does NOT include the song BringIt On. Oh no, that would be sensible. BringIt On the song is on this, their second album. Got it? Oh well, never mind.
It sounds much like BringIt On but more laid back. The first track, Hangover is a classic ode to those lovely people who look after you when you have had to much of a good night. There?s something of everything thrown in, including an electric Sitar ? eek!.
BringIt On (That?s the song remember folks) has a really great staccato guitar section in the verse but is, in my opinion, let down by the chorus which just seems to come from another song ? and not a particularly good one either. No such complaints with Rhythm & Blues Alibi though. Like me it seems, Gomez aren?t to keen on modern R&B and used this song as ...
Gomez are back and this time they have discovered samples.
Machismo is the first in a series of EPs to be released by the band as a follow up to their Mercury Prize winning debut album, BringIt On and their second album, Liquid Skin.
The classic Gomez sound is still there to be heard on Machismo, including catchy acoustic guitar riffs and unmistakable vocals, but they have also introduced samples and have experimented with some new sounds. The results are good and they prove that Gomez are prepared to move forward musically and not just stick to the same old formula, which is what often happens with bands at the moment. ...

Advantages: Good cover art and one or two good tracks Disadvantages: Feels like they are just churning it out for the sake of a new album now
I loved the first Gomez album, BringIt On, despite the abscence of my favourite track, BringIt On. I kinda liked the second album, Liquid Skin. It retained the true essence of Gomez in most of the tracks on the album, like Rythym & Blues Alibi and Blue Moon Rising...however, Abandoned Shopping Trolley Hotline left me feeling like I had just wasted £12. It contains a couple of rehashed tracks from BringIt On and only a couple of tracks that I actually liked...the rest were just filling in the horrendous gaps and not very well.
If you are a completist, then you have to get the album anyway, but if you are just tempted to get a Gomez CD and don't have either of the first two, get BringIt On or Liquid Skin instead of this one... ...
Gomez: Ian Ball, Paul Blackburn, Tom Gray, Ben Ottewell, Olly Peacock. Additional personnel: Steve Fellows (guitar); Ian Bracken (cello); Susie Wright (saxophone); Mat Quinton (tuba). In simple terms, Gomez' debut is the result of a long studio woodshedding session by five Scottish lads sick to death of Britpop. So rather than nick riffs from the whole history of English rock, as many of their UK contemporaries had been doing throughout the '90s, Gomez looked to America for inspiration. Their reverence for the roots-influenced sounds of California rock circa 1971 is only exceeded by their admiration of Beck's ability to update folk-rock records by cutting and pasting modern textures onto them. And all of BRING IT ON swings between these musical ideas. Thus, while singer Ben Ottewell does a good Rod Stewart (another Scot who looked to American roots music for his muse), and acoustic guitars lead standard bar band instrumentation through the faux blues-rock grooves of mid tempo raves like "78 Stone Wobble" and "Get Myself Arrested," sampled vinyl scratches and dubbed out vocals date the songs as late-'90s creations (ain't no retro here). Seamlessly combining these philosophies during their finest moments, Gomez play like Primal Scream's laid-back and understated younger siblings--heads full of the same old American jive, but powered by booze and pot smoke rather than Ecstasy.

Spin (9/98, pp.191-192) - 8 out of 10 - "...Gomez...has...steeped itself in retro-Americana: the Band, Little Feat, the Grateful Dead, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Captain Beefheart....Ultimately, BRING IT ON works, because, to hell with quote marks, it's a damn beautiful record." Entertainment Weekly (9/11/98, p.132) - "...While their retro pastiche of swampy guitar, Vedderesque vocals, and goofy lyrics is initally bewildering, it slowly grows into sonic shapes that are as dense and oddly beautiful as wild kudzu." - Rating: B+ NME (3/23/02, p.36) - 9 out of 10 - "...To say that Gomez are fake is to say the same about the fledgling Stones banging around the Richmond Tavern high on Bo Diddley. It's fantasy, man. Chill out..."
