THE FRONT COVER TO BROTHERSINARMS.
Well as I have said a few times on my reviews, the front cover to ...
Advantages: Just a terrific album. Disadvantages: Still associated with yuppies in their BMW's
Did you know that DireStraits and Chris Rea were considering collaborating together on a new album. However, the deal collapsed when they couldn't decide what to call the new band, one option was Chris Straits and the other option was .......
Anyway, enough of the bad taste (attempted) humour and on with the review.
Back in 1977 Mark Knopfler formed a band called the Cafe Racers. Prior to an early gig supporting Squeeze at the Albany Theatre, a friend of the bands then drummer Pick Withers, commented that the band looked so destitute and poor that maybe DireStraits would be a more appropriate name. The rest as they say is history.
After scraping together enough money to record a demo, DireStraits were snapped up by Phonograms Vertigo record label. In January 1978 they toured with Talking Heads as their support band ...
Advantages: A classic, beautiful guitar based music Disadvantages: A little short
id the lowlands, and always will be. Some day you'll return to, your valleys and your farms, and you'll no longer yearn to be, BrothersinArms"
This album was a departure from the previous works by DireStraits, and the last album of note, before the band split. It hit number one like a rocket and stayed in the charts for nearly three years. A classic by anyone's standard, even more so in these days of manufactured pop bands and recycled songs. Because of it's age it can frequently be found reduced in Woolworths, or as part of their latest 3 for 2 offer. Get it. ...

Album Notes
Dire Straits: Mark Knopfler (vocals, guitar); Hal Lindes (guitar); Guy Fletcher, Alan Clark (keyboards); John Illsley (bass); Terry Williams (drums). Additional personnel: Sting (vocals). Recorded at Air Studios, Monserrat, West Indies. All tracks have been digitally remastered. German limited edition was remastered in Super Audio CD 5.1 surround sound. This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. BROTHERS IN ARMS found Dire Straits at the peak of a long climb in the music industry. After an auspicious debut with DIRE STRAITS, they stuggled on through personnel changes and shifting musical tastes. Knopfler's work with Bob Dylan (SLOW TRAIN COMING and some touring) and the band's appearance at Live Aid helped to keep their recognition high. This album proved to be the payoff, as "Money For Nothing" hit number 1, and the second single, "Walk Of Life" also made the top-10.
