critically acclaimed documentary.Accompanying Ry Cooder, producer of the 1997 Grammy award-winning album Buena Vista Social Club, back to Cuba, Wim Wendera encounters Ibrahim Ferrer, Company Segundo, Ruben Gonzalez, Omara Portuondo and other members of the band. Together, these veteran musicians reminisce about the glory of their musical past where, at the height of their success in the 1930s and 40s, they were acclaimed as the greatest musicians in Cuba. The film observes their rehearsals with Ry Cooder in a studio, leading up to their first performance in America, at New York legendary Carnegie Hall.A remarkable record of an immensely gifted group of musicians, Buena Vista Social Club is a journey as emotional and uplifting as the music itself.

phenomenon selling millions of copies internationally and winning a Grammy. When Ry Cooder travelled to Cuba again early in 1998 to record a solo album with Ibrahim Ferrer - again with all the musicians of the Buena Vista Social Club - Wim Wenders accompanied him with a small film crew, observing the musicians in the studio and tracing their lives in Havana. The film continued in the spring in Amsterdam where Buena Vista Social Club gave two concerts and ended, finally, in the summer in New York with a triumphal concert in Carnegie Hall. The result is an inspiring and uplifting story of a group of incomparable musicians recreating a bygone era with their fascinating reminisces and awesome music.

son musicians who make this album really special. Reminiscent of Ellington in its scope and sense of hushed romanticism, Buena Vista Social Club is that rare meld of quietude and intensity; while the players sound laid-back, they're putting forth very alive music, a reminder that aging doesn't mean taking to bed. Barbarito Torres's laoud solo on "El Cuarto de Tula" is both more blinding and more tasteful than any guitar showcase on any recent rock album; a quote from "Stormy Weather" and some very distinct parallels to Hawaiian styles remind us of why it's called "world music." --Rickey Wright

Social Club. The group--really a gaggle of aging Cuban maestros brought together for stunning all-star performances--keeps its footing in Cuban dance music at the same time as it revels in the lax tempo of layered hand percussion and traditional rhythms. Ibrahim Ferrer stepped to the international fore as the vocalist on the eponymous BVSC CD in 1997 and here furthers his already-obvious command of everything from sultry, horn-swaying ballads to gritty son tunes like "Mamí Me Gustá." Ferrer's tattered vocal inflections shape the more rollicking tunes so their texture is palpable, especially when belted in antiphonal give-and-takes with the rest of the huge band he totes along here. A 15-member-strong string section steps forward on the bolero tracks, which send off a smoldering passion that's startling in light of the BVSC's heightened, horn-charged charts. But the rich string passages color songs in wide brush strokes, which is to say that they heighten the passion to no end. Ferrer's debut might come in his twilight years, but it's a majorly luminous event. --Andrew Bartlett

Omara Portuondo was, undoubtedly, the star of the Buena Vista concerts in the late 90s, ... more
impressing with her controlled, cool voice, suggesting a whole unsung subtext of emotion. If you liked the original Buena Vista Social Club album, then you'll certainly like this: 11 tracks of Omara Portuondo singing the lead, occasionally sharing the foreground to sing duets with Ibrahim Ferrer (as on the classic "No Me Llores Mas"). The rest of the Buena Vista Social Club are all present and correct; Ruben Gonzalez, Compay Segundo and Cachaito López are among the musicians, alongside Manuel Mirabel on trumpet who plays as if he's on fire. There's a string section on board too, giving this a fabulous Old Habana cabaret edge. But this is never camp: it treads the is-it-sad-or-is-it-happy? line of much successful Cuban music beautifully. Alongside notable songs such as "Donde Estabas Tu", with its beautiful trumpet and fiery percussion, there's the classic "No Me Llores Mas", a melancholic "Chan Chan "-like lament with absolutely splendid horns which remind the listener how special the Buena Vista Social Club is. --Neil Bennun

Advantages: Latest OS, some nice features, looks and feels a lot nicer Disadvantages: Compatibilty, still some bugs, possible system shock, need a decent spec machine
When it comes to operating systems I tend to stick to what I know. I don't rush out and buy the latest OS for at least 2 years. It took me until 2004 to bother with XP. My main reason is I tend to get comfy with an operating system usually around the same time that a new one comes out. The only real exception to this was the upgrade from Windows 98 SE to 2000 and that was only because I was given an installation disk. My other reason is it gives the peeps who make the OS time to iron out the bugs (and believe me - even the most robust operating systems in the world have bugs). So it was kicking and screaming that I ended up with Vista. And I mean literally kicking and screaming...

Advantages: Brought Cuban music, and the surviving stars of its heyday, to a wide audience in a way that's supremely touching and enjoyable Disadvantages: None...even if you think you don't like this genre of music, by the end of this film you will!
York's CarnegieHall three months later. Wenders captured it all, creating a movie that perfectly complements the BuenaVistaSocialClub record.
The official live performances are intercut with footage (both musical and interview) of each member of the BVSC, as well as journeys around the dilapidated beauty of Cuba itself. The juxtaposition of stunning, weathered architecture and the surorunding poverty - a troubled history appears to have left the country in a time-warp - is visually arresting. There's a sad beauty to much of it, and this poignancy is heightened by the gorgeous sounds of these (mostly) ageing virtuosos - either in tandem, or solo - as they play in front of the camera from a variety of locations.
It's this aspect of the film which best conveys the spirit of BuenaVistaSocialClub, and the effect is slowly captivating ...
Advantages: Joyful and evocative documentary. Great music. Disadvantages: None.
down long-forgotten musicians - many of them in their 90s - who used to play in the BuenaVistaSocialClub. The result is a poignant tale of them getting the first chance to perform in many years.
They may have been forgiven, therefore, for being a little rusty. However, the music carries the listener away. I did not know the names of the musicians involved, but the BuenaVista apparently hosted some of Cuba's best bands. They had not forgotten their talents, even after a span of nearly 50 years. Most of the musicians had played since they were children, and they had lost none of their skill.
Seeing all of them puffing away on fat Havana cigars, I wonder whether the anti-smoking lobby might consider banning this film - it seems to put across the message that smoking makes you live longer!
The listener is left with a sense of what ...
