I'm only writing this to brag. I saw them live a few days ago, at Manchester, the final gig of the 2000 tour, and quite possibly the last time they will play together, and they were fanstatic! I picked up the cd ages ago - when it first came out, because it had a nice photo on the cover and I was going through one of my experimental phases, and instantly fell in love with it. Since then I've been encouraging all of my freinds to give it a spin, and it's been taken suprisingly well. Two of my freinds who have succumbed rang me one day a couple of weeks ago and said 'they're playing' but I thought it was all sold out for months (as it was), but my freinds managed to call on the day that the 3 best tickets in the house were returned, so there were we, at Hola Cubana, watching one of the finest performances I have ever seen. The last time I was at that venue was to see Nina Simone, who got a 5 minute standing ovation as she walked onto the stage. I was stunned then as to the strength of feeling and respect for such a musical figure, and as each of Ruben Gonzallas, Ibhrim Ferver and the other members of the band walked on, again, such respect was shown. As they played a mixed set of album classics, new material, and old Cuban classics, the passion they showed and enjoyment they felt was reciprocated by the audience in a way I haven't seen since when I saw Pearl Jam play earlier this year (but I'll come onto that in it's own review). their music intertwines the stunning talent of various key individuals, backed up by Cuban jazz rythums which are passionate and attention grabbing. As a collection of some of the finest musicians today to hear them pool their talent to create a well rounded, rich sound was a real privilege, and to hear them showcase eachother's performances gave a deeper understanding of the make up of the music and the band. Anyway - I've just found out that I've been offered anotehr job, so I'm going to go celebrate ratehr then writing this - la la la, la la la It's great to be me!
