Social Club. The group--really a gaggle of aging Cuban maestros brought together for stunning all-star performances--keeps its footing in Cuban dance music at the same time as it revels in the lax tempo of layered hand percussion and traditional rhythms. Ibrahim Ferrer stepped to the international fore as the vocalist on the eponymous BVSC CD in 1997 and here furthers his already-obvious command of everything from sultry, horn-swaying ballads to gritty son tunes like "Mamí Me Gustá." Ferrer's tattered vocal inflections shape the more rollicking tunes so their texture is palpable, especially when belted in antiphonal give-and-takes with the rest of the huge band he totes along here. A 15-member-strong string section steps forward on the bolero tracks, which send off a smoldering passion that's startling in light of the BVSC's heightened, horn-charged charts. But the rich string passages color songs in wide brush strokes, which is to say that they heighten the passion to no end. Ferrer's debut might come in his twilight years, but it's a majorly luminous event. --Andrew Bartlett

When it comes to operating systems I tend to stick to what I know. I don't rush out and buy the latest OS for at least 2 years. It took me until 2004 to bother with XP. My main reason is I tend to get comfy with an operating system usually around the same time that a new one comes out. The only real exception to this was the upgrade from Windows 98 SE to 2000 and that was only because I was given an installation disk. My other reason is it gives the peeps who make the OS time to iron out the bugs (and believe me - even the most robust operating systems in the world have bugs). So it was kicking and screaming that I ended up with Vista. And I mean literally kicking and screaming...

Featured vocalists are Company Segundo, (89 years old), OmaraPortuondo (the only female vocalist on the album), and Ibrahim Ferrer (70 years old), who is my favourite on vocals.
The overall flavour is one of romantic dance (salsa) / party music, with some lounge music ("Dos gardenias") in there, even a little hint of country music with the steel guitar on "Orgullecida".
The lyrics, with English translations (all songs are, quite rightly, sung in the native language), are in the excellent booklet, but the songs so beautiful, it really doesn't matter about understanding the lyrics.

"Music is a treasure hunt. You dig and dig and sometimes you find something."(Ry Cooder, 1999) I had heard of BuenaVistaSocialClub for many years but only recently I dug out this treasure and started to appreciate it. Sometime ago I saw the documentary film about BuenaVistaSocialClub on FilmFour; I was so captured by the music in the film that I ordered the CD album straight away from Internet.
Ry Cooder, the producer of the CD, said in the introduction, "In Cuba the music flows like a river. It takes care of you and rebuilds you from inside out." I could not agree more. Ry Cooder was a popular American guitarist who took a keen interest in world and folk music; in 1997 he went to Havana and hunted down a number of old age musicians to record this fabulous album.
