Album Notes: The German SPV label continued its exploration of obscure American Soul and R&B labels with this installment, which focuses on proto-R&B and jump blues from the late 1940s and early '50s. The most famous name of the bunch is certainly Wynonie Harris; tracks such as "Dig This Boogie" and "My Baby's Barrel House" certify Harris as one of rock-&-roll's finest early purveyors. While sides from more obscure artists such as Bobby Platter ("Beer Bottle Boogie"), Tucker Coles ("Don't Get Excited"), Sherman Williams ("My Flamin' Gal") offer equal evidence that rock & roll's roots are as much in this raw offshoot of big-band swing as they are in country, gospel, and blues.
Advantages: May be the best contemporary white female blues singer and acoustic guitarist you'll ever hear. Disadvantages: None

For all I know, Rory was in the room as well at the time, helping her Dad run the place.)
Just being in the sandal shop was an apprenticeship that dictated young Aurora Block’s direction in life. At age 14 she was transcribing old blues songs note-for-note, no mean feat considering that she was partial to the unusual rhythms and odd tunings of Delta-style blues. Rory, as she was known, ran away from home with Grossman in her 15th year, moving to California.
When they came back, the two collaborated on the influential Kicking Mule Recordsrecording of How to Play Blues Guitar. In the late 70s, however, she deviated from form, recording three albums with major labels over which she had no artistic control whatsoever. They turned out more “pop” than she wanted, and she stopped recording But in...

To some, 'jazz' is a dirty word, conjuring up images of men in polo-neck shirts and dark glasses who say 'Nice' a lot and generally just make a noise. This however is not that kind of jazz; instead, it's from an era of jazz that is much more laid back, friendly and easily accessible to most people - a style of music that I can only describe as 'vintage'. If you're not a fan of popular music prior to the 1960's this probably isn't an album you'd enjoy; however if you like the style and simplicity of "vintage" music, you'll probably appreciate this album.

...on the move, which is where I prefer to have music playing and so I wanted a copy of the soundtrack album.
Considering where the Blues Brothers were supposedly from, the opening number is quite appropriate. "Born in Chicago" is a 1960s style blues number with a rock 'n' roll undertone and reminds me of a slowed down version of a Chuck Berry song, although with the emphasis more on the blues end of the spectrum than the more rock 'n' roll sound that Berry had. But as I'm a Chuck Berry fan, even a slight comparison is good for me.
The performer of the next track, "The Blues Don't Bother Me" is perhaps the most interesting thing about it. Although he's been a part of the Blues Brothers Band since the start, this is the first time I've heard Matt "Guitar" Murphy sing. It turns out he's got a gruff voice which is perfect for singing the blues...
