is that few musicians possess such an expansive emotional range. And those complex, unsettled emotions never seem to come one at a time; instead, they are layers to be peeled and reassembled. When the mood is ominous, you still sense an urgent hopefulness around the bend, and even on a jaunty Dixieland number like "Suzie Blue", with its playful trombone and clarinet, you can see the clouds on the horizon. The tension may not always be overt, but it's never lower than just below the surface. Angry, aggressive metal rants; bruising, bombastic, operatic rockers; light-hearted Caribbean grooves; strutting Southern boogie; deep country soul; and delicate acoustic folk play out like scenes within a Byzantine film. Harper's soulful moans, agonised groans, and earth-shaking whispers narrate this battle between shadows and light, and his sonic war zone is as dynamic, detailed, and diverse as it's ever been. As weighty as but more personal than its three predecessors, Burn to Shine has the sensation of grandeur that seems to accompany all of Harper's work, but it's more than a delusion. --Marc Greilsamer

Advantages: a superb exhibition of these guys talent Disadvantages: not enough recognition
The first time I listened to this album, I was very pleasantly surprised. It isn't renowned as one of Harper's most successful albums, but it sure is one of his best. From the deeply moving "Beloved One" to the catchy "Steal My Kisses", this album guides you through almost every emotion with the Harper's soft and warming voice being the lead.
The lyrics are, as always with Harper, very impressive. There's a real sense ... ...that comes across through his delivery. It seems he is improvising every time you listen, something you missed the last time suddenly becomes apparent and his genius becomes evident.
Musically, again Harper and the Innocent Criminals excel. Every individual band member is talented and it comes across in the music. Small sections of improvisation perfectly executed add to the music, where lesser musicians would have faltered and detracted ... more

From the deeply moving "Beloved One" to the catchy "Steal My Kisses", this album guides you through almost every emotion with the Harper's soft and warming voice being the lead. The lyrics are, as always with Harper, very impressive. There's a real sense that this guy is writing from his own experiences and that comes across through his delivery. It seems he is improvising every time you listen, something you missed the last time suddenly becomes apparent and his genius becomes evident. Musically, again Harper and the Innocent Criminals excel. Every individual band member is talented and it comes across in the music. Small sections of improvisation perfectly executed add to the music, where lesser musicians would have faltered and detracted from the song. Not only is the music satisfying, its also intriguing. This is down to the range of timbre adopted, with the album including many different guitar based instruments - lap slide, steel, acoustic bass, ukulele and 8 string to name but a few, most of which are played by Harper himself. He boasts a talent of being able to play over 20 instruments, one of which he invented himself. My favourite track of this album is "Suzie Blue", a soft jazz-esque track, with trombones, a clarinet, ukulele and double bass. It offers such a contrast from tracks like "Please Bleed" and "Less", both of which adopt a hard rock feel. Then, there's "Show Me A Little Shame", a track which is again jazz-esque but with more passion, a very strong track which brings a smile to ones face (despite what the title might suggest). Overall, this album is a gem waiting to be discovered by the majority. A Ben Harper fan would recognise this album as one of his best, and would surely quote "Steal My Kisses" and "The Woman In You" as the best known from this album as both appear on the live album "Live From Mars". An album well worth exploring, and well worth purchasing.

Album Notes
Full performer name: Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals. The Innocent Criminals: Ben Harper (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Juan Nelson (bass); Dean Butterworth (drums); David Leach (percussion). By using a wide range of influences and styles, singer/songwriter Ben Harper manages to create a harmonious gem with BURN TO SHINE. Fans of Harper will not be thrown off by his dynamic versatility. In fact, new listeners will be drawn to the buffet of moods and emotions. "Steal My Kisses" is an up-tempo folk track that features a bit of human beat-boxing underneath. Harper's soft ballad voice shines bright on "Beloved One." Other tracks to check out are "Alone" and "The Woman in You," which both show off the tender side of Harper's songwriting. If you looking to rock outright, check out the title cut and "Forgiven."
Album Reviews
Spin (11/99, p.193) - 7 out of 10 - "...His delivery becomes its own kind of theater: It's the sound of someone desperate enough to scream - for blood, for truth, for anything that's real. It's those transformations...that light up Harper's dauntingly eclectic fourth effort..." Q (11/99, p.124) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...On a song called 'Forgiven' he uses his muscle in surging bursts, counterpointing quiet acoustic verses to catch the turmoil of his preoccupation with earthly wickedness and divine grace..." Mojo (10/99, p.120) - "...the hoarse entreaties, the uncoiling curls of slide guitar, the religiose imagery, the smouldering verses bursting into flaming choruses - [are] all present on [BURN], along with several new features that suggest the guitarist's trying to broaden his stylistic palette."
