Advantages: Classic tortured black metal. Disadvantages: Experiments in ambience are largely dull.
The second full-length release by Norwegian one-man-band Burzum moves beyond the primitive raw black metal of the self-titled debut and controversial 'Aske' E.P. towards something more refined, involved and emotionally resonant, an experimental balance that would continue with the next two albums before Varg Vikernes was imprisoned for the murder of Euronymous, his former Mayhem bandmate and producer. Released in 1993, 'Det Som Engang Var' expands the scope of Norwegian black metal, and is one of the most intriguingly unsettling listening experiences I frequently subject myself to.
The songs are mostly based around simple repeating guitar riffs and pounding, albeit rather quiet drums, all providing the background for Varg's screams and yells. As with all Burzum releases from this point onwards, the opening songs are more distinctive ...
Advantages: Great catchy riffs and excellent songwriting Disadvantages: Not very original, but then who cares.
on occasion to open, mid paced sections compete with hypnotic, depressive chord progressions reminiscient of Xasthur and Burzum, melodic yet ominous finger tapping and eerie, dissonant chanting.
Burzum references are particularly apparent on the long, drawn out and deeply melancholy interlude "6.6.6", and in the frenetic , raw, yet melodic riffing early on in the title track "My Soul For His Glory". This is by far the best song on the album, combining as it does an endless stream of fiendish, filthy, chugging riffs with rasping screams and monotone chants, downcast sombre guitarlines and soaring, melodic punk riffs Darkthrone would be proud of. It all flows brilliantly, and is one of the best black metal songs I've heard in a long time.
Its a hugely enjoyably and consistently strong album from start to finish: a great slab of blasphemous ...
Advantages: Emotionally powerful, well executed Disadvantages: Not for the fainthearted.
of interest to fans of Burzum, Svart, Coldworld, Abyssic Hate, Hypothermia and Mourning Dawn.
