Some of you who’ve read a few of my previous albums may have picked up on the fact that I like Phil Collins. Well, I’ll let you into in a widely known secret that isn’t really a secret anyway – he’s my favourite solo artist! I bet you never expected that! …..Ok, you saw it coming a mile off. Back to the review. ;-D
NB – Genesis is a favourite band of mine too. Phil Collins was in Genesis, don’t you know! :-D
But Seriously is a great album. It was the album that introduced me to the music of Phil Collins, although this album is quite a bit different to his previous works, following a more upbeat theme. He’s turned to a more live sound now, going from a jazz-rock sound to something more pop-like or even alternative. Every track is worth a listen in its own way.
Another difference to this album and the previous albums is the fact that Phil has supporting artists featuring, including names such as Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton. The Phoenix Horns provide most of the trumpets, trombones and saxophone.
THE TRACKS
There are 12 tracks on this album. Lyrically, they vary, but on the whole, the lyrics are well written. The music
of each track is good and has a great sound to it.
1 – Hang In Long Enough – A great song to begin the album. This song is almost certain to improve your mood and encourage you to continue, regardless of how you’re feeling. A continuous drum-beat is surrounded by the odd trumpet riff with an occasional guitar hit. Mild keyboards and bass continue throughout and the song ends with a nice bit of slide guitar. A great song. – 8/10
2 – That’s Just The Way It Is – A slow song, this is a classic Phil Collins track. Slightly similar to his previous tracks, keyboards, synthesised-drums and bass make up most of this song, with an odd bit of guitar and the familiar sounding bagpipes to end. The lyrics are beautiful and thought provoking. A nice tune. – 7/10
3 – Do You Remember? – At the start, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s the same as track two, but those ideas will quickly fade. A light-guitar led song with keyboards and bass providing support, this is another beautiful song with a memorable chorus. – 7/10
4 – Something Happened On The Way To Heaven – A quick and loud intro leads us into this fast-paced song. Trumpets take the lead with guitar in support. The drums are evident and necessary. The chorus of the song may make you think that you’ve heard this song before – it did for me – but this is good, as it will be memorable. Not one of his best, but still a good tune – 7/10
5 – Colours – A more thought-provoking song, this will make you consider others not as well-off as you. A slow start, this long tune starts off with keyboards leading the music, but within a couple of minutes, a faster drum beat begins, and a little bit longer, the song begins to sound more upbeat with guitars, drums and trumpets. A great song with lots of different aspects. – 8/10
6 – I Wish It Would Rain Down – This ballad is a great tune. The guitar comes with compliments from Slow Hand himself, Eric Clapton. The lyrics are sung brilliantly by Phil, just as his drumming is great. This is definitely one of the best songs of Phil’s career. – 10/10
7 – Another Day In Paradise – Another song which makes you think about others whose life isn’t brilliant. Thought provoking lyrics are surrounded by interesting drumming and a haunting but memorable keyboard melody. This is another great song. – 9/10
8 – Heat On The Street – A fast song, this isn’t hugely special. It isn’t, however, bad. Musically, the guitars and trumpets provide most of the riffs, with the odd bit of keyboard peeping through every now and then. The lyrics aren’t memorable. An interesting song which I wouldn’t say is the best of the album, but it isn’t anywhere near the worst either. – 7/10
9 – All Of My Life – A saxophone introduces us to this song. This is a very thought-provoking tune with great lyrics. Throughout the song, the saxophone provides us with quiet melodies, while keyboards and guitars provide occasional support, including Steve Winwood on the Hammond organ. About three quarters of the way through the song comes a great solo guitar riff. This is probably my favourite song of the album. – 10/10
10 – Saturday Night And Sunday Morning – The instrumental! This isn’t really something to be excited about though. It starts off as a very Latin-jazz styled song and then changes to something more blues-like. Trumpets and drums are the main instruments of choice. Nothing special, but worth a listen, just a bit short. – 7/10
11 – Father To Son – There are so many songs with this title, but this will probably be the best. Keyboards, synth-drums and the odd bit of guitar make up this song. The lyrics are good and sung calmly by Phil. All in all, this is quite a good, occasionally beautiful song. – 8/10
12 – Find A Way To My Heart – This is a great finisher to the album. Starts of slowly, with bongo-like drums and a guitar roaring, it suddenly builds up by the chorus, with the guitar singing more. Phil sings a memorable chorus. – 9/10
OVERALL
This album is certainly one of Phil’s finest moments. I would recommend this to both Phil Collins fans and those who don’t know him alike. An instant conversion tool and certainly well worth the price.
