Advantages: Engaging, well-drawn characters Disadvantages: May require multiple readings to fully appreciate
There's definitely some satire in Will Self's latest novel, TheButt. A tourist carelessly flicks away his final cigarette, and then finds himself charged with attempted murder after it hits his neighbour's head. The satire's target, however, is less clear. Is Self (a man pilloried for taking cocaine on a politican's plane, remember) simply having a dig at the absurdity of the smoking bans that are sweeping across the Western world? Or is this a more sophisticated examination of compensation culture? Moral relativity between different cultures? Post-colonialism? Or, as seems likely, all of the above?
The book is set in a distant land which can't quite make up its mind whether it's supposed to be Australia or the Middle East. It's never actually named, but clearly Allegorica would have been a perfectly apt name. Broadly Antipodean ...
Advantages: The Buttes are Awesome Disadvantages: The drive and the snakes are really long
In May 2008 my husband and I went to stay with a dear friend in Colorado who was a fabulous host and guide to the Denver region. He'd not let us down with his other hot tips for tourism so we ...
Advantages: Story okay for kids, humour brilliant for adults Disadvantages: Okay so the plot's weak.. .but who cares?!?!?
I saw Thunderbirds without very high expectations - it looked like a cheesy kids adventure with no real surprises in store. Still, I was interested to see what they did with the concept of Gerry Anderson's vintage puppet show.
Taste the cheese. The cheese is goooooooooooood.
I wasn't born when the puppets of International Rescue first started strutting their heroic stuff no TV, and by the time I became fashionable again, I was too old to want to watch it. I have seen one or two episodes, but I'm not what you'd call a fan. With cartoons and the like being made into films with varying degrees of success, how would the puppets fare?
For anyone who knows little or nothing about the original series, it's about a retired astronaut (Jeff Tracy) and his five sons. They operate out of a secret island base (Tracy Island) as ...
