this is one of mariahs best albums. it was the first one that she got to show her 'true self' with her music and it really shows. compared to previous albums, butterfly has much more personal lyrics and has more r&b whereas all her other albums were more pop.it still has her trademark ballads such as butterfly and my all which proves she hasnt strayed from her roots, mariah has said she really enjoys singing ballads. my favourite ballad on the album is outside, which i think is about mariahs feelings as a child that she never fitted in with everyone else because she was mixed race. the lyrics in this song like ''early on you face the realisation you dont have a space, where you fit in, and recognise you were born to exist'' show how much more personal the lyrics are to her, and its a side of her that hadnt been shown before. 'Butterfly' is a much more mature album. the r&b influence is shown on the song Breakdown, which is a huge favourite with fans. it features rappers bone thugz 'n' harmony, but isnt what you would think when you know they are on it, it is a very melodic song about when some one breaks up with you and putting a brave face on. the more mature side of mariahs music is shown in the song ''the roof'' which is smooth and melodic sounding r&b, and it again shows mariahs songwriting skills. mariah also does a cover of a prince song; ''the beautiful ones'' which is a different sound for mariah. it features r&b artists dru hill, and i think their voices give this song something different than the original, its worth listening to. the singles that are on this album are some of mariahs most popular; 'honey' which has a more 'poppy' sound is always a good song to listen to and maybe dance! my all is a ballad that was very popular for mariah, her vocals are amazing on it ,and the rest of the album. there is a kind of dream like quality to 'butterfly', especially on the song ' fourth of july' . i can listen to it over and over again and it never gets boring. the music can appeal to lots of people, it has songs that people can really relate to and i think mariah has really proved her songwriting and producing skills. she has really made the sound of the music her own, i havent heard anything like it. i would highly recommend this album, its quite possibly mariahs best.
Advantages: Every song is fantastic Disadvantages: none
Mariah is at home in the R&B department and this album is (in my opinion) her best so far. There are alot of R&B flavored tunes in here and I would say that almost all of the songs on this album are amazing and ones that you can play over and over. Some of my favourites on this album are The Roof, BabyDoll, Breakdown, Honey and Fourth of July. I think she should have included the remix of My All by Jermaine Dupri featuring Peter Gunz and Lord Tariq ...

I have been a big fan of Mariahs for many years now and after buying her latest album my respect for her has grown even more! This album has songs on it that complement her amazingly sultry voice. Rainbow sees Mariah team up with well known and well loved artists such as Usher, Snoop dog and Jay-Z. My personal faveroute on the album is track 10, Crybaby, which is excellent! People have often complained that Mariah does too many slushy slow ballads ...

Advantages: a couple of good tracks Disadvantages: not so good for the ears on the high notes
A girl with a really really high pitched voice can be quite an earache. Mariah Carey has got a squeaky voice! On the other hand she has got a really nice husky voice when she sings ballads like Thank God I’ve found you with the boy group. I got the album ‘Butterfly’ and I really hate looking at the cover… why can’t I have a body like that?? I do try…. Honest! (as I eat the rest of my chocolate bar!)
I had to laugh at the heartbreaker video where ...

...order you can point to Butterfly and say with confidence that this is where she Lost It Big Time. I thought her previous album Daydream was a slight mess, trying to cater for a few too many tastes, but Butterfly takes the proverbial biscuit. The first track, Honey (you MUST watch the video – it is unintentionally hilarious) sees Mariah trying to do hip-hop by employing a rapper who repeats words to the effect of “Mariah, On Fire” (because there aren’t ... ...On the title track Mariah is back to her schmaltzy self, screaming her guts out (and in the video she’s in bed with a horse. I kid you not), and in between is just a huge mess. She was definitely a far better artist when she was “controlled” by her husband/boss, Tommy Mottola. ...

Advantages: A great mix of tastes Disadvantages: It doesn't play forever!
This has to be one of my favourite Mariah albums. With 14 tracks it is a lengthy CD, each song unique from the last and fantastic in its own right.
It includes many of her hits, such as 'Honey', the haunting 'My All', and the beautifiul cover of 'Whenever You Call'. My absolute favourite on this album would have to be her rendition of 'The Beautiful Ones' which features Sisqo. This track is performed better than the original (which I never thought ... ...this particular track on 'repeat' several times.
The lyrics of each song are whistful and deep in meaning, as with all of Mariah's penned songs. She shows her range to its full potential and gives her all on this CD - that is evident.
Out of all of Mariah's CD's, I would recommend this most highly. It is outstanding and shows Mariah at her finest. ...

Advantages: good old fashioned pop Disadvantages: a few dodgy tracks
...to the MariahCarey track of the same name. Probably best to think of Kylie as the Red Admiral, and Mariah as the Cabbage White. 'Butterfly' also happens to be one of my favourites off the album.
'Under The Influence Of Love' is another uptempo swing-a-long, which would have sounded at home on a Kylie album of years gone by.
'I'm So High' is perhaps not the most memorable track off the album, but is nonetheless listenable enough.
The penultimate track is 'Kids', her near-chart topper with Robbie Williams. Too much Williams, and not enough Minogue for my liking. Still, the rest of the album more than makes up for it.
The album's title track is also the last. Another dancefloor filler, 'Light Years' is one of her best ever tracks, even with the spoken bits, where Kylie plays air hostess. I guess you kind of have to listen to...

Advantages: Mindblowing ballads Disadvantages: Boring repetitive pop tracks
.... Not Jackson's best comeback debut, but very catchy. There's excessive and unecessary "ooh-ahh-meh-che" vocalling but this is a great dance track.
7. BUTTERFLIES (4.40) 7/10
The title reminds me of a MariahCarey hit. Another R&B track with thick electronic drums. Whilst the lyrics are nice, the tune is smooth, the music is very mediocre and repeptitive, the drumming is too loud.
8. SPEECHLESS (3.18) 8/10
Bizarrely the start of this track reminds me of a typical Beautiful South track, the a-capella ballad. This is quite a nice ballad, though somewhat a bit too feminine for Jacko.
9. 2000 WATTS (4.24) 6/10
Sounds like a Backstreet Boys kind of "well-ard" pop track. At least Jacko tries to experiment but this clearly is not his style.
10. YOU ARE MY LIFE (4.33) 10/10
Beautiful ballad, Jackson at his best. Sounds...

Advantages: prince at his most dazzling, accessible and enjoyable Disadvantages: Only 9 songs...17 Days (B-side of When Doves Cry) should have been included for a start
...didn't escape the attentions of MariahCarey, however, who covered the song on her 1997 album Butterfly. A delicate ballad of romantic angst, it escalates in tandem with the increasingly desperate voclas to a deranged climax.
Perhaps wisely, the next two tracks are something of a recovery period for the listener, and could be the album's least-loved moments. Computer Blue is two songs melded into one, that grooves along quite pleasingly but would never be considered Prince's greatest 4 minutes. It does have the erotically ambiguous spoken intro from the 'are-they-or-aren't-they-lesbians' duo of Wendy & Lisa, who formed part of The Revolution - "Wendy? Yes, Lisa? Is the water warm enough? Yes Lisa. Shall we begin?".
Darling Nikki was the first song I'd heard use the word "masturbation" in its lyrics (was I sheltered? or have times...

"Honey" was nominated for 1998 Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song. A mature and contemplative Mariah Carey emerges as if from a chrysalis on her seventh album, displaying her now-familiar otherworldly vocal abilities tempered by a new restraint, as well as an infallible ear for irresistible rhythm-based, hook-laden music. BUTTERFLY's uptempo songs, including "Honey" and "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)," are flawlessly produced and catchy, and the title track soars with the spirit of independence and freedom. BUTTERFLY is full of such hopeful, uplifting moments, but it is equally infused with a deep sense of sadness and loss, as displalyed on the album's numerous ballads, most notably "Breakdown," a simple, honest song with a "Tears Of A Clown" motif, on which Carey sings of hiding her sadness from the world. Both joy and grief are explored on this album with equal tenacity.
Album Reviews: Rolling Stone (10/30/97, pp.66-67) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...moves still further away from the warmed-over Whitney Houston of Carey's early recordings and firmly into the milieu of modern, hip-hop-inflected R&B. The surprise is that she does it rather well..."
