this is one of mariahs best albums. it was the first one that she got to show her 'true self' with her music and it really shows. compared to previous albums, butterfly has much more personal lyrics and has more r&b whereas all her other albums were more pop.it still has her trademark ballads such as butterfly and my all which proves she hasnt strayed from her roots, mariah has said she really enjoys singing ballads. my favourite ballad on the album is outside, which i think is about mariahs feelings as a child that she never fitted in with everyone else because she was mixed race. the lyrics in this song like ''early on you face the realisation you dont have a space, where you fit in, and recognise you were born to exist'' show how much more personal the lyrics are to her, and its a side of her that hadnt been shown before. 'Butterfly' is a much more mature album. the r&b influence is shown on the song Breakdown, which is a huge favourite with fans. it features rappers bone thugz 'n' harmony, but isnt what you would think when you know they are on it, it is a very melodic song about when some one breaks up with you and putting a brave face on. the more mature side of mariahs music is shown in the song ''the roof'' which is smooth and melodic sounding r&b, and it again shows mariahs songwriting skills. mariah also does a cover of a prince song; ''the beautiful ones'' which is a different sound for mariah. it features r&b artists dru hill, and i think their voices give this song something different than the original, its worth listening to. the singles that are on this album are some of mariahs most popular; 'honey' which has a more 'poppy' sound is always a good song to listen to and maybe dance! my all is a ballad that was very popular for mariah, her vocals are amazing on it ,and the rest of the album. there is a kind of dream like quality to 'butterfly', especially on the song ' fourth of july' . i can listen to it over and over again and it never gets boring. the music can appeal to lots of people, it has songs that people can really relate to and i think mariah has really proved her songwriting and producing skills. she has really made the sound of the music her own, i havent heard anything like it. i would highly recommend this album, its quite possibly mariahs best.
