Album Reviews: Spin (7/97, pp.117-118) - 7 (out of 10) - "...CABO VERDE is such a superlative display of Evora's skills precisely because it isn't so slow and anguished....CABO VERDE is the session that finally carries Evora beyond her home territory, throwing a party that evokes sorrow even while purging it."
Advantages: Uplifting and joyful Disadvantages: For a debut album, it's hard to fault
...bass drum; the ratchet-like scrape of the Brazilian reco-reco (track 7); Cuban congas (track 10); Ocean Drums (tracks 7 &10). There is also plenty of string instrumentation: Portuguese guitar; cavaquinho (a miniature 4 string guitar); mandolin; electric bass. Further contributions come from guest musicians on cello, saxophone, trombone and there is the welcoming sound of accordion on track 11.
Songs and Musical StyleProbably the most famous Cape Verdean musical export until now has been CesariaEvora, who made an impact on the international stage twenty years ago with the album La Diva Aux Pieds Nus. For a while she was a leading light of world music performing her 1992 hit 'Miss Perfumado' around the globe. Mayra herself came to the fore as Evora's support act. This was a few years after she won the gold medal at the Francophonie...

Advantages: Great Live Album With 1 New Song Disadvantages: Could Have Been Better Without Rob Zombie
...Alice Cooper - A Fistful Of Alice
This live album was recorded at Sammy Hagars club (Van Halen Guitarist) the Cabo Wabo in Mexico in 1996. This is a brilliant live album and shows Alice in his prime (recorded when he turned 48). He doesn't need backing singers unlike other singers of his grounding now although Rob Zombie duets on Feed My Frankenstein & Elected. Slash from Guns & Roses plays lead guitar on several tracks.
1. Schools Out (Sammy Hagar on Lead)
2. Under My Wheels (With Additional Lyrics)
3. I'm Eighteen (Still Sung With Conviction
4. Desperado (Listen To The Flamenco Guitar Work)
5. Lost In America (Slash On Lead)
6. Teenage Lament '74
7. I Never Cry (One Of Alice's Best Ballads)
8. Poison,
9. No More Mr Nice Guy
10. Welcome To My Nightmare
11. Only Women Bleed (Slash On Lead)
12. Feed My Frankenstein (with...

..., version of Greensleeves. Bonny Portmore (which is about the destruction of forests), Tango to Evora and the very dramatic The Old Ways are also worth mentioning.
Loreena's voice sounds both dramatic, but also haunting on this CD. I also love the selection of instruments used (harp, sitar, fiddle and many more). I am amazed that Loreena's music is not being known in the UK (her decision to stop touring has obviously not helped) as she does appeal to such a wide range of people. Her music is loved by folkies, romantic dreamers, Pagans and, erm, 'normal' more mainstream individuals.
If you are interested in ordering any of her CDs it is worth checking out her website at http://www.quinlanroad.com/ (you can order from a mail order address in the UK). The prices are competitive and there are lots of goodies you can't get in the shops....
