The departure of Dave Navarro and the return of John Frusciante signals a return to the more funky side of the Chili’s. No doubt everyone who disliked their previous album, One Hot Minute, will be glad of this but personally I liked the change in style that was present on it. Anyway, the CD: Around the World is a beautiful song mixing in bright and breezy verse with a soaring chorus. Scar Tissue, the first single off the album, you must have heard it in case you haven’t it’s a song whose sheer brilliance comes from it’s simplicity. Get on Top however is a shouty mess that verges on the atunal, guess some things still haven’t moved on from One Hot Minute. I Like Dirt suffers in the same way but the following track, This Velvet Glove, would be my candidate for the best track on the album though I can’t put into words why. The album winds down with the acoustic piece, Road Trippin’ – a song about going surfing. Overall this album is right up there with anything else the Chili’s have done.
