Being around since the mid-eighties, The Red Hot Chili Peppers have obtained legendary status with musical delights such as 'Under The Bridge' and their albums 'One Hot Minute' and 'Blood Sex Sugar Magik' which really are brilliant if you like that type of music and who could forget their sensational tour in the red square of Moscow... So with their latest Album 'Californication' all expect more of the same. Unfortunately you can't always get what you want...
A shame really as the first four tracks start the album exceptionally with 'Around the world', 'Parallel Universe', 'Scar Tissue' and 'Otherside' However with the exception of incomparable songs like 'Californication', 'Easily' and 'Road Trippin' the album begins to go hay-wire. It possible to accuse the album of being too 'funky' with 'Get On Top (Quite possibly the most annoying song apart from The Rocks solo debut) or too 'flat' with Porcelain, this song nothing more than waste of 2 and a half minutes of your life... So I've mentioned two bad songs, so what!? Well the varying tempo in 'Right On Time' doesn't work. Other songs such as 'Purple Stain', 'I like dirt' and Savior are too cheesy and just don't cut the mustard. There are 15 tracks on the album lasting 56 minutes and 17 seconds, a reasonable time, but you need to half that to get what you actually might listen too. All is not bad though as this does feature some of the RHCP's best work with 'Otherside', 'Parallel Universe' and of their traditional album titled song 'Californication', all that offer skilled guitar use and excellent vocals.
Conclusion
I can't call myself a devoted RCHP fan but those who are may take a different view to what has been written, however when comparing this album to 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' and 'One Hot Minute' it falls short. To get a great album you need one that doesn't have any inferior songs, sadly this does... Nonetheless it does have some exceptional songs aswell. Below I written that it is recommended you buy this album, however I mean that you should but only when it becomes cheap.
