That the Chili Peppers still exist is nothing less than a miracle. Their original guitarist died from a heroin overdose, second six stringer John Frusciante left after ground-breaking single Under The Bridge and nearly went the same way, and singer Anthony Kiedis admits to fighting a continuing battle against the drug. Little wonder than this, their eighth album, should be so downbeat.
Yet it's a mood that suits the harmonies and contemplation of tracks such as Scar Tissue contrasting nicely with the likes of Get On Top, as sexually obsessed a volley of incendiary funk as they've ever recorded. And with Frusciante back in the fold the sound is more potent that ever, his economical style helping to make this as vital as the classic Bloodsugarsexmagik.
