From the monumental, original sophomore effort ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magik’ in 1991 to today’s ‘By The Way’ it has been a decade full of experimentation, energy, and brilliant musicianship for a Los Angeles quartet. Starting with competitors like ‘Rage Against the Machine’ their Rap-Rock mixed music has survived enough to compete with Today’s bands like ‘Limp Bizkit’, ‘Linkin Park’. After not matching the success and appeal of there first album, all changed in 1999 with the release of ‘Californication’. The pillar of nineties was growing old but maturing in a true musical sense. Honestly I think their rap-rock mixture, lyrical structure matched anyhow to intense, exploding, brilliance of ‘Rage Against The Machine (RATM)’. (For those who don’t know Rage Against the Machine, remember track ‘Wake Up’ in Matrix movie played at the end when Neo
gets the hold of Matrix world. If you liked that song then you know why I’m praising RATM).
As a young I never heard RHCP till their single ‘Otherside’ on a local music channel. The vocalists mellow yet versatile singing range amazed me. I couldn’t help listening to more of the band only to reveal the brilliance, melody of singer ’Anthony Kiedis’, Guitarist ’John Frusciante’. Although I did not hear much of bass but drumming of ‘Chad Smith’ sounded satisfactory. I sort of reverse evolved by listening to Blood Sugar Sex Magic’ after ‘Californication’. Songs like Right on Time, Around the World, Get on Top are the only tracks to soothe hardcore RHCP fans. A band has to decide weather to reach a wider audience or keep satisfying bunch of fans. In order to reach wider audience melody, softness, sing’ able song play a major role. Remember I wouldn’t have been a fan if I hadn’t listen to Californication.
I know lot of Bands breaking up when it comes to changing their musical style with time. For instance take an example of Rage Against The Machine. Tom Morello -Guitarist wanted to expand their sound in order to keep up with new age music. While Zack – Vocalist wanted to pursue with the old hard rock - rap style. Soon ego, difference of opinion started to creep in and as a result Zack left the band. Finally what suffers is music. I don’t want to provide a solution to this unsolvable problem, since it depends upon the understanding between band members and their decision making as together. In case of RHCP, they were unanimous with their decisions and changed their music to reach wider audience (or for whatever other reasons). They carried on to produce some good music in spite of criticism from hardcore fans for being commercial and dropping their original style. Today what we have is 'By The Way’ and a possibility of writing one more review.
Title track ‘Around The World’ is reminiscence of what RHCP used to be. It’s a good starter to the album with funky, energetic touch. Bassline is crunchy, clear and heard. My favorite tracks on the CD are Scar Tissue, Otherside, Californication, The Velvet Glove, Savior and Road Trippin’. ‘Parallel universe’ is a catchy melody well sung by Anthony. The outro solo is very noisy and full of crunchy Guitar distortion. Its not that I don’t like this song, I leave it for someone else to like.
For insomnia suffering people there is a complete, easy and safe solution. Listen to ‘Porcelain’ before going to sleep. RHCP has over softened its music with a compromise to reach even wider audience including Babies and infants. Only possible classification for this song is under LULLABY category. I feel embarrassed mentioning this song. Right on Time and Get On Time are for old, faithful hardcore fans with incessant rap verses. Emit Remmus, I like dirt and Purple Stain sound ordinary and are CD fillers.
I many possibilities for the title of this album review,
A Studio Album
Good but Not RHCP
The best album of 90’s
RHCP returns with a masterpiece
Good CD worth a buy
I followed the Golden Mean and came up with a well know proverb. My advice to you…Go for it!

Advantages: Contains some stunnning songs, great guitar riffs, thumping bass and drums combine excellently with great vocals and lyrics. Disadvantages: There are a couple of weak songs which mean only four stars not five
