Chili Peppers return with their 7th album (yeah they've been around for almost 20 years, 18 to be precise) and its a great come back, making up for the not-so great 1995 effort of "One Hot Minute", perhaps the reason for this is the return of John Frusciante (replacing Dave Navarro - Janes Addiction). He returns to a band with extradinary vocals in Anthony Keidis and one of the best rhythm sections in rock, consisting of Flea (bass) and Chad Smith (drums). The album once again keeps alot of Chilis original brand funk-rock-punk stylings but also has some more poppier rock such as the Classic "Californication", it also reveals a slightly darker side in "Otherside". It is once again a welcome return to Chilis former glory, right up there with the likes of Mothers Milk and BloodSugarSexMagik, while managing to show how RHCP have matured over the years with more mellow tracks like "Road Trippin".
1) Around the World: A return to the older style of chilis with their distinct punk-funk sound a great opener.
)Parallel Universe: Strong drum beat can be heard throughout with some great vocals as well.
)Scar Tissue: One of the best songs on the album showing RCHPs more mellow almost poppier side (great video too)
)Otherside: Probably the darkest song on the album, but also one of my favourites, again the rhythm section is brilliant in adding the depth needed.
)Get on Top: Not my favourite on the album but still worth a listen with very strong vocals throughout.
)Californication: The title track and possibly the best song on the album exploring the morals and ethics of california. (also features one of the best videos ive ever seen)
)Easily: A much faster song than californication before it which helps to add balance to the album.
)Porcelain: One of the only weaknesses of the album, and what i view as the worst song on it, although that might just be me but its very slow and fairly depressing.
)Emitremmus: Strong bass line in the back ground but not really that great guitar. 10)I Like Dirt: Another return to the classic RCHP funk-punk.
)This Velvet Glove: One of my favourites i find it very relaxing, and the guitar is once again top notch
)Savior: Again not one of my favourite songs on the album but everyones taste is different so u may like it.
)Purple Stain: Another return to the old style Chili peppers and once again its very welcome although might be more pop-orientated than some of the older stuff.
)Right on Time: Not bad, fast vocals at the start but slow to the chorus balancing the song well.
)Road Trippin: What i think is the perfect end to a great album with a very chilled final track, played all acoustically, with some strong vocals to match.
This is perhaps one of the best albums i own and i believe everyone should at least listen to it once if not actually own it. Its a welcome return to past glory for the Chili Peppers.
