In December 2007, I went with my wife and a couple of friends to Wembley Arena to watch the Canadian crooner Michael Buble. He is currently at the top of his game as a singer of the standards (Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, etc), and has also written his own material. Then, at Christmas, I opened one of the presents from my wife and found his lastest offering Call Me Irresponsible. The I put in the CD player......

Buble's voice resonates well throughout the album, and his big band sounds behind him make the music very enjoyable. Buble does not just do covers, his rearreanges some of the songs, showing that he is not just a singer, he has musical skils across the board. The version of 'Me And Mrs Jones' is very close to the original, but he provides enough delay on some of the notes to create almost a brand new sound. 'That's Life' is a world famous standard, and he provides a roaring version of 'I've Got The World On A String' with his band providing some backing vocals and adding a bit of a personal touch into the track. However, they are still versions, and they are all similar in style to each other, and this could put some people off. To listen to the album as background music over and over and over is fine - is the sort of the music that blends with conversation, but for variety it's not great.
Yet for all the versions he performs, the best track on the album in my view is his own: 'Lost'. It is written and sung from the heart, and provides a lot of melodies in a more commercial love ballad theme as opposed to a standard. The same is true of 'Everything' which has a little hispanic sound to it, but 'Lost' remains the best track.
The album is a great collection of versions and original music. I rate it at 4 stars.
The album is currently available from amazon.co.uk for £6.23 new.
A breath of fresh air to my ears. Ok so there are some covers but a truly clear voice and very mellow. There is a variety of songs on this album all very professional and beautifully mixed. I would class Michael Buble in the Easy Listening category, the melodies are very relaxing. He is a true professional and in my opinion this is true value for money. The backing singers and musicians he uses are a compliment to his singing style and sound.

Quick review of Call Me Irresponsible - Michael Buble
I bought this CD as soon as it was released and I love it (I'm off to see him in concert soon). If you are a fan of Michael's then you will love this too. I think there is one song I'm not so keen on but for over all appeal it is great and I've been playing it over and over in my car since i bought it. ...

Advantages: Smooth Dulsit tones Disadvantages: a couple of duff tracks that are skipable
Its a good album. a couple of songs that arent what ive come to expect of his normal class judging by previous albums i have of his. Still very smooth and classy though and some really good catchy songs that you swing along to. I particularly 'recommend ive got the world on a string' and also his version of 'thats life'
'Me and Mrs Jones' features apparently Emily Blunt (his latest squeeze) doing backing vocals. Shes not bad, but theres not really ... ...would say if your just getting introduced to Mr Buble, try one of the other albums first, Id recommend 'its time' id say thats his best. Ive also seen him live and hes very entertaining, definately gives you your moneys worth live! Dont judge him by this album, though its good in its own way. ...

Advantages: Includes his single 'Everything' Disadvantages: Some bad arrangements and a lisp!!!
This is Michael's latest release and I have to say, having been a fan since his UK launch, it isn't as good as his previous work. Michael specialises in re-energising and transforming established 'covers' and well known tunes that sit well into big band music, but the selection on this CD is somewhat tired and outdated. His previous CD's have had great musical arrangements, and they have certainly brought the life back into tunes that were far at ... ...this CD just don't seem to make that work. Whether he has changed production team, I don't know, but this hasn't got the usual magic we expect of Michael. There's also a ridiculous version of 'World on a String' which he sings with a lisp!! Yes, you read it right, a lisp!! Heaven knows what was on the producers mind there! or Michael's for that matter. If it was supposed to be a joke, it passed me by. If you're a Buble fan, then buy it, because you ...

I saw this guy on Parkinson and thought it's another Jamie Cullum. Took a chance on his album and found it really good. I won't say excellent but good. It is one of them albums you can play and not take much notice of. Its more than background music but not something I would sit and listen too paying full attention to it. I do the ironing or write web articles whilst it plays in the background. That said, I will give this cd to my nan and I know ...

heritage, with all that going for him, is it any wonder he has the voice he has? I'd admittedly never heard him much before seeing him live but I am glad that I didn't as it made me much more appreciative of his style of music, people I have spoken to since have heard of him as a big band, king of swing style singer, but having no preconceptions, I feel this is the best way to listen to MichaelBuble.

Canadian swinger MichaelBuble first came to our attention with his debut album "MichaelBuble" in 2003, with apparent sales of 4 million (from wikipedia). His follow up album "Its Time" was equally as successful with the haunting lead single "Home" bringing him to a much wider audience. Now, 4 years on, he comes back with "CallMeIrresponsible".
The album opens with "Best Is Yet To Come" a track originally recorded by Tony Bennett, but most famously performed by Frank Sinatra. Its a fitting opening to this album, both stylistically and in title. But its "Me And Mr Jones" that really gets the ball rolling. A track that I dont particularly like, Buble's take on the old classic is the best I've heard. Where the album comes alive though is on the stunning "I'm Your Man" - originally written and recorded by Leonard Cohen. This ...

Album Notes
Michael Buble ranks among the best of the contemporary crooners working in a classic pop-vocal style, and his 2007 album, CALL ME IRRESPONSIBLE, further refines his suave, smooth style. With its finger-snapping big band arrangements, the album has its share of homage to Frank and Dino, both obvious cornerstones of Buble's music. But this isn't merely a retro exercise; the tunes, the production, and the overall feel are decidedly contemporary. Stylistically adventurous versions of songs by Eric Clapton, Leonard Cohen, and Willie Nelson keep things lively, while "Everything," a Buble original, is one of the album's highlights. Still, cuts like the lead-off track ("The Best Is Yet to Come") and the old chestnut "I've Got the World on a String" will give listeners looking for some elegant, back-in-the-day pizzazz exactly that.
Album Reviews
JazzTimes (p.91) - "[Buble] suggests the caramel-smooth creaminess of Steve Lawrence, the sensual warmth of Vic Damone, the swingin' bravura of Dean Martin and the boyish showmanship of Wayne Newton."
