Album Reviews: Melody Maker (8/19/95, p.32) - \"...CALYPSO-IS LIKE SO may finish with two slabs of pretty standard film-star-turned-crooner fare...but mavericks like Mitchum were used to having inappropriately comforting endings tacked onto their best work. The genuine calypso stuff is startlingly good...\"
Advantages: More than a companion piece to the first Addictions release, a richly diverse and satisfying collection of tracks Disadvantages: Still only covers up to the end of the 1980s, so nothing from his more recent albums is featured (no great loss, it has to be said)
...to Volume 1's Bad Case Of Lovig You. The sound is sharp, invigorated rock.
I DREAM OF WIRES, like Style Kills on the first compilation, features Gary Numan as both musician and writer. Gurgling, primitive 1981 synths give the track a Human league-aurra (definitely a very good thing), while the lyrics paint an eerie futureworld. "I am the final silence, the last electrician alive. And they called me the sparkle, I was the best I worked them all....I dream of wires." This track, in particular, stands out as one of Robert Palmer's finest. I Dream Of Wires will have gained a wider exposure through its inclusion here than it ever received tucked away on the Clues album.
THE SILVER GUN, from 1983, embraces eastern influences to the extent of actually being sung in Urdu, and - as ever with Palmer - impressively and unaffectedly so. Around...

Advantages: Brilliantly creative, inventive, innovative... etc. album played by a stunning list of musicians Disadvantages: some might find it pretentious
...if anybody out there knows, please tell me!! She gives the album a kind of passion and warmth that Fripp in hi intellectualism sometimes misses, and so I feel her contribution is as important as Fripp’s own and that of Eno or Hammil.
North Star is apparently a love song – while writing this I’ve been investigating – by Walton about her and Fripp and sung by Daryl Hall. There’s something quite gentle about it yet also something reminds of me of Breathless, though with the guitar slowed down a bit. This is no bad thing in fact it’s quite positive. Hall’s vocals are quite similar to Hammil’s on Disengage. Both are quit taut and tense; in this case in counterpoint to relaxed gentleness of the music.
Chicago is seemingly also a love song by Walton about Fripp’s smile. He smiles like Chicago. Don’t ask me what this is meant to mean...

Advantages: good tunes and really catchy Disadvantages: only one really outstanding track
...This is a self-titled album by singer songwriter Robert Post. He comes from a small village in Norway called Langevaag and he got together with two friends, Tor and Alf, and set about to record an album. Tor does the drums and Alf plays bass for Post. Mike Hedges is the producer of the album, who has produced work for many different artists such as the Manic Street Preachers or Travis. This album looks like it could be set to be big in due time.
Again, I first heard some of his music through a friend, when he downloaded one of the songs though iTunes. Once I’d heard this song, I wanted to hear more as it was so upbeat and yet seemed to be different to general pop music that you would hear on the radio. I listened to the album with enthusiasm waiting for more wonderfully crafted songs that really make you want to sing along. I...
