With the voice of Justine Timberlake and Prince's dirty mind, Har Mar Superstar is a ... more
self-styled R&B sex god andYou Can Feel Meis his electro-funk invitation to worship. Unfortunately, he looks like a medallion-wearingBoogie Nightsreject cavorting in sweaty Y-fronts. Nevertheless, the second album from the Minneapolis freaky dancer, born Harold Martin Tillman, is hard to resist; its wicked sense of humour and pornographic p-funk make it the most entertaining thing to happen to R&B in a long time.Using little more than a drum machine and an overactive libido, Tillman summons up rude disco and DIY cyber-struts that put "Elephant Walk" and "H.A.R.M.A.R" up there with Outkast's skewed sci-fi best. "We Could Be Heavy" has him demonstrating his lip-licking seduction to the dirtiest of grooves but for R&B thrills nothing beats the inter-office flirtation of "Power Lunch". To a grinding space-invaders click track that even The Neptunes would be jealous of, he trades come-ons like "Your name is sex in my rolodex" and "I'm appetised by your thighs" with an equally excited female colleague, peaking with the refrain "Deeper, deeper, I can feel you beeper". Crazy, sexy and--in a sleazy 70s porn star way--very, very cool. --Dan Gennoe

Advantages: excellent human drama Disadvantages: none
I first came across esteemed playwright Kenneth Lonergan when I saw the much-touted production of his This Is Our Youth the year before last. Since then I?ve kept meaning to follow up and finally got one more step down the road in watching his celluloid directorial debut, YouCan Count On Me.
This simple tale of fraught familial relations stars the luminous Laura Linney in an Oscar nominated turn as Sammy Prescott, who has spent her whole life in Scottsville, New York, and has settled into a routine of being Lending Officer at the local bank, raising her son Rudy (Rory Culkin) as a single parent, and filing the correspondence she receives from her wayward brother, Terry (Mark Ruffalo in a career breakthrough performance). Over the course of a few months, however, her life seems to slowly revolve on its axis, as Terry returns home ...
Advantages: Entertaining if you can disengage your brain Disadvantages: Feels rushed and far too implausible
worked characters which fail to involve you in what they are doing.
What does come as a surprise is that this is a piece of directional work from Steven Spielberg, and from such a great director you would expect more. The whole film lacks the intensity that the concept deserves and at times the whole thing feels slightly rushed, pushed out just to make money, well a lot of director's make films for money rather than artistic merit so why not Spielberg. Part of this problem probably stems from 2002 being another year where we see Spielberg put out two movies in this case "Minority Report" in the summer and "Catch Me If YouCan" in the winter. But despite feeling rushed the film has some positives, the most prominent one being that it captures the feel of the 60s, when it is set, brilliantly both in set design, costume and sound track ...
Advantages: Reality of it all, performances, complex. Disadvantages: Won't work for those who want easy answers.
movement feels real as we watch these people going on with their lives. Film will often present us with characters spouting elaborate lines that few would really come up with. Thanks to the skill of writer/director Kenneth Lonergan, YouCan Count On Me has characters that speak like real people.
This benefits us as over the course of the story, we really do become emotionally invested in these characters. Nothing is simple here; every character questions even their own actions. After an encounter with Brian, Sammy goes to visit her priest. This is the kind of town where everybody knows everybody else, and so they skirt around the issue, not wishing to confront the issue head on. "What is the church's official position on adultery these days?" "Well..it's a sin." This is of course obvious to both of them, yet because of how well they ...
