This album is really one of the better albums out there. It sort of stinks as a whole that everybody doesn't love it.
Everybody should try and obtain this CD.
I hope everybody who buys CDs, will please go out and spend their good money on this one.

poker-faced 1972 debut as smoothly accessible in its music as it was elusive in its thematic concerns. The opening "Do It Again" snagged swift commercial success as one of the most mysterious pop hits in history, a sultry rock cha-cha that chronicled a series of harrowing catastrophes far removed from the reheated love songs and pro forma counter-cultural rebellion of the day. Though the core band boasted two formidable guitarists, Jeff Baxter and Denny Dias, it was the bloom of Fagen's keyboards and his reedy, smart-ass vocals that carriedThrilllight years beyond modal, blues-based rock. That said, an enduring highlight remains the furious six-string fantasia of "Reelin' in the Years", spiked by Elliot Randall's downright historic solos, at once dour and giddy in its indictment of a poser, while "Dirty Work" (featuring short-lived, nominal lead singer David Palmer) offers a decidedly adult vignette of adultery. There isn't a weak track here, astonishing, considering how much growth future Dan albums would display.--Sam Sutherland

Advantages: What good is great. Disadvantages: Some bad tracks.
In 1972 when this album came out “Steel Dan” where (the nucleus of the group even then was “Walter Becker and “Donald Fagen” because they wrote all the songs) a new group, and hadn’t yet decided on their sound.
So in the form of an experiment they tried various members of the band in the role of lead vocalist.
First up as the lead singer “Donald Fagen” on the outstanding track “Do it Again”, this song begins with percussion and drums along with marimba and vibes giving the overall rhythm track a “Latin” flavour, the memorable chorus of “You go back Jack do it again, Wheel turin’ ‘round and round’ You go back Jack do it again”.
Then on the next track “Dirty Work” a singer with the name of “David Palmer” ...

Digitally remastered by Roger Nichols (Riversound Studios). Even the debut from Becker and Fagen put them stylistically a cut above the others. Played alongside the Doobie Brothers and the Eagles on smooth FM radio, Steely Dan were linked immediately to the west coast music scene, a fact that was utterly wrong. This was and is, an east coast album; it is also assured, laid-back and layered with the jazz and soul influences that made their special kind of rock. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter added the metal and David Palmer added pop vocal - but, from this sparkling debut we can clearly see Becker and Fagen in immaculate control. "Do It Again" is of course, a diamond.
