Tales of the Arabian Nights in Musical Form
Review of Rimsky-Korsakov: Sheherazade by  Rahielli

Advantages: Gorgeous Melodies, Exciting, Storytelling Piece and all around Beautiful Music
Disadvantages: None

...a position as professor of instrumentation and composition at St. Petersburg Conservatoire in 1871 (not bad for a largely self-taught individual I’d say) and resigned his commission in the navy the following year. He had quite a distinguished musical career. At the Conservatory he taught many of the other famous composers we know today such as Sergei Prokofiev and Igor Stravinsky! His main orchestral works include Sheherazade (which I’ve been told should be correctly spelled as Scheherazade) and Capriccio espagnol. He wrote fifteen operas which included The Tale of Tsar Saltan (which contains the well known Flight of the Bumblebee), Khashchei the Immortal, and Le Coq d’Or or The Golden Cockerel. Rimsky-Korsakov died in Lybensk in 1908. *********************** The Piece: *********************** Sheherazade (also spelled Scheherazade... Read review

Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony: Refined passion
Review of Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5 by  berlioz

Advantages: Great passion, beautiful melodies, unrestrained romanticism
Disadvantages: The finale doesn't quite convince in it's purpose

...HAPPINESS, OR TRAGEDY? After the doom-laden confessional that was the Fourth Symphony, Tchaikovsky was finally getting more in peace with himself. His fame began to spread and by 1885 he was already considered a national hero. This time saw the maturation of Tchaikovsky's style from the more blatantly folk-song oriented works and the more youthfully turbulent ideas to a more mainstream and calmer drift. Following the Fourth Symphony came the Violin Concerto, the Second Piano Concerto, the colourful overtures Capriccio Italien (composed during his bright stay at Italy) and 1812 (with the famous cannon-fire finale), the subtle String Serenade, the elegiac Piano Trio, a couple of small operas, and the large scale Manfred Symphony, amid some smaller scale works, all predominately genial in character. In 1888, after getting over his fear... Read review

Discovering Our Greatest Living Pianist
Review of Bach: Keyboard Works by  zerbine28

Advantages: Brilliant, stirring, excitingly unpredictable, fresh performance; "genius" is not hyperbole in Argerich's case.
Disadvantages: Reflecting its LP origins, the CD lasts only 50' 16"!

...one of the world’s genuine living legends. Find out for yourself why so many who have experienced that rarefied, divine, yet deeply human musical world created by Martha Argerich so hate to leave it. Now, if only she would record the Goldberg Variations, or any other solo Bach work … *sigh*… CD TITLE: JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH: Toccata BWV 911 * Partita BWV 826 * English Suite No. 2 BWV 807 1 Toccata in C minor, BWV 911 Partita No. 2 in C minor, BWV 826 2 Sinfonia 3 Allemande 4 Courante 5 Sarabande 6 Rondeau 7 Capriccio English Suite No. 2 in A minor, BWV 807 8 Prelude 9 Allemande 10 Courante 11 Sarabande 12 Bourée I/II 13 Gigue Martha Argerich, piano Deutsche Grammophon ©1980 289 463 604-2 Some definitions… TOCCATA...
