Album Notes: The Sea & Cake: Sam Prekop (vocals, guitar, keyboard); Archer Prewitt (guitar, keyboard, steel drum); John McEntire (recorder, keyboard, drum, steel drum, percussion); Eric Claridge (bass instrument). Audio Mixer: John McEntire. Issued in late 2008, CAR ALARM marks the Sea & Cake's second studio album since its '07 reactivation, and stands as one of the Chicago post-rock act's most immediately engaging outings. Fronted, as always, by singer/guitarist Sam Prekop, the quartet launches into a Neu-like motorik sound with the driving "Aerial," and later moves into Velvet Underground territory on the chiming and urbane "On a Letter." Though some fans may miss the Sea & Cake's earlier experimental-leaning era, CAR ALARM proves that the group is undeniably vital and still carrying the mantle of Windy City indie-rock royalty without burden.
Album Reviews: Alternative Press (p.155) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Post-rock inflections, electronic embellishments, artfully designed arrangements and time changes, and the sighing vocals and breathy phrasing of guitarist/vocalist Sam Prekop. True to form, the band deliver yet again on CAR ALARM."
Advantages: safer car - lots of features can be added Disadvantages: sneers of "friends" on the car I had it fitted too
...(sorry for the bad pun in the title)
Reason for fitting:
I recently had a toad alarm fitted to my little Fiat Seicento. I had originally seen information about remote locking on the owners club website and wondered how much a remote unit would cost.
As my Fiat already has central locking, it shouldnt be too much of a problem to get a kit to activate it remotely.
I hadn't really thought about an alarm until a friend suggested that a caralarm should have the remote control feature anyway.
After asking for advice on the 'cento owners club forum again, I was recommended the Toad system, and also a fitter in Wakefield. (Unfortunately this company no longer fitted toad alarms and over £300 for their cheapest was a little too much)
I did find Safe n Sound on Ebay, who were prepared to come and fit the Toad AI606 to my car...

Advantages: well written, individual perspective, very of its own time Disadvantages: biased & dated
...was born then, too.
People who know, even very perfunctorily, the locations Theroux is visiting, will enjoy "The Kingdom by the Sea" much more: half of the pleasure of reading it is stomping your feet and shouting "bloody idiot, it's not like that AT ALL" at the book. I was surprised how many parts of coast he described I actually did visit or even lived on at least for a short time myself.
Another pleasure is to tick off things that are still very much a feature of life in these islands and those which are gone, probably forever. We still have those cars with old people, parked at the very edge of the sea, and the people in them, even on mild days, just looking at the sea, sometimes on camping chairs but still within touching distance of their ugly, smelly metal box. But so much of the world he's describing is now gone: from...

Advantages: A new very strong sound, with much variation throughout the album Disadvantages: Maybe not to everyones taste, but definitely a good future for the band
...They have been descibed as new-rave, indie, disco but Sunshine Underground can't be put into one scene just like that, there are no limits in the band's music. From the pumping basslines of "The Way It Is" and "Panic Attack", to the enchanting melody and slightly haunting vocals of "Somebody's Always Getting In The Way", each song experiments with something new.
After hearing the track, "Put You In Your Place" I immediately took a liking to the band and I bought the album just after Christmas last year, hoping it would meet my expectations set by the mentioned track. I wasn't dissapointed. The steady but strong bassline and drumbeat starting off the album with "Wake Up", sets the mood of the album perfectly and immediately you know your money hasn't been wasted.
As I have said it is a difficult task to try to give the band...
