We were told that St Kitts is one of the safest islands in the Caribbean with a very low crime rate, and it is certainly safe for tourists to wander around the capital at night without any fear for personal safety. We hired a car for three days of our holiday so we could explore every corner of the island but taxis are cheap and plentiful and so it?s not really necessary. However, if you prefer larger hotels with modern facilities, you should stay in the southern edge of the island with its sandy beaches and coves. ++ SO WHAT SHOULD I DO WHEN I?M THERE? ++ When we were in St. Kitts, we tried not to do too much. However, after a while we did get itchy feet and a desire to explore. I would recommend any of the following activities: VISIT BRIMSTONE HILL FORTRESS NATIONAL PARK: Prepare to be amazed, as your car slowly winds its way up the hill - the view from the fortress is breathtaking. You are 800 feet up and will have amazing views across the Caribbean to Nevis, Montserrat, Saba, St. Martin and St. Barts. ...'s on St Kitt's. Montpelier is gorgeous - think English country house by the sea. The grounds are fabulous. The food is to die for. And the new American owners are making huge improvements to the place - and I mean improvements. It was getting a bit faded when they took it over, and they've introduced smart, contemporary-traditional touches in terms of decor which only add to the already lovely atmosphere. Dinner is a joy, wth the Lincolnshire-born chef producing stunning contemporary Caribbean and European-influenced dishes. I've never felt such a disinct sense of peace when entering any hotel as when we drove on to the grounds at Rawlins Plantation. We were shown to our gingerbread cottage, sweetly furnished with a four-poster and antiques, and left to bliss out until afternoon tea arrived on out porch. We befriended the lizards... Read review
