Advantages: amazing piano improvisation Disadvantages: not for people who don't appreciate improvisation
One of the most respected pianists of our time, KeithJarrett, gives with the "Koln concert" a good definition of what improvisation is. Innovation, creativity, the feeling of uncertainty. KeithJarrett is the kind of pianist that emerged during the 60's deeply influenced by Bill Evans and got mixed up with all sorts of jazz styles: fusion, bop, funk, avant garde and even classical music. In this recording you can find all his musical influences, concentrated in an improvisational way, unfolding in front of your eyes, or maybe ears. The result is quite amazing, if you think that KeithJarrett wnated to actually cancel this concert because the piano that he was provided with, was not of top quality. For people who love piano and moreover improvisation in general, this is certainly a priority choice. ...

Although a concerthall, St georges is also used for other things such as plays (where I saw a very good performance of Fiddler on the Roof by the Wibsey Amateur Actors society) and even a pantomime (though this seems substandard once you've seen the one at the Alhambra). The decoration and service inside, howver is on a par if not greater than that of the Alhambra although they're both run by the corporation. The architecture on the outside is also brilliant, even enhanced by the 1970's atrocities on Petergate and Hall Ings that surroud it. The quality of performances is also brilliant but this hardly relates to the building itself. It also has a Rendezvous bar if you are meeting up with someone there and if you're staying overnight the Victoria Hotel up the road provides an excellent choice. ...

Personnel: Keith Jarrett (piano). Recording information: Carnegie Hall, New York, New York (09/26/2005). Keith Jarrett never ceases to amaze, and amaze he does on the two-disc CARNEGIE HALL CONCERT. He's known for solo piano concerts of completely improvised music that set a high standard for invention, elegance, and sheer compositional ingenuity, but it's almost incomprehensible that Jarrett is able not only to sustain these qualities, but to push them toward greater heights on each outing. The pieces on CARNEGIE HALL CONCERT are markedly different from Jarrett's previous work: dense, internal, and noticeably compressed, yet without being shorn of the artist's trademark sense of lyricism, classical nuance, or bluesy groove. Jarrett continues to grow as a master of his instrument and the world of musical ideas, and the results are spectacular to behold.
