Advantages: Very Heavy! Disadvantages: Too monotonous and dark perhaps?
When I first heard this album, it was as a bootleg CD. At first I thought it was some early work unearthed circa Creatures of the Night, but later I found that it was the unmasked Kiss' swansong.
The opening track 'Hate' is just so heavy! Gene's lyrics are typically dark and foreboding here and throughout the album. Some of Paul's efforts are very reminiscent to me of the 'Creatures' period. Of course, we finally get to hear Bruce ... ...trying to do an impression of Gene.
This album to me is the darkest that Kiss have ever done, but saying that was one of the best they have made since they took the make-up off. It is only bettered by Alive2 and Psycho Circus.

Of course, we finally get to hear Bruce sing the lead vocals - shame really as he is trying to do an impression of Gene.

Advantages: A couple of high points Disadvantages: Generally disappointing
This one is a bit of a curiosity. Originally scheduled for release in November 1995, having been recorded by the Simmons/Stanley/Kulick/Singer line-up as a follow up to 1992's "Revenge", it was shelved because of the reunion of the original four members (Frehley/Criss replacing Kulick/Singer). Much bootlegged thereafter, it was officially released two years later, and I've finally got hold of a copy myself.
Gene Simmons sings on the opening track ... ...the second, "Rain" (one of five by him), but both are very similar with their dark, almost grungy ambience. "Master and Slave" has a slightly more familiar riff and bass-line. "Childhood's End" sounds a little disjointed, but "I Will Be There" is a gentler affair, written by Stanley for his son Evan. Aww, nice. "Jungle", "In My Head" and "It Never Goes Away" all sound remarkably similar to the opening pair. There is a bit of variation with "Seduction ...

Album Notes
Kiss: Paul Stanley, Bruce Kulick (vocals, guitar); Gene Simmons (vocals, bass); Eric Singer (drums). Producers: Toby Wright, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley. Recorded at Music Grinder Studios, Hollywood, California. CARNIVAL OF SOULS is the last studio recording with Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer before the return of original members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. Despite a 1996 press conference on the U.S.S. Intrepid that announced Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer were on a "paid temporary vacation," the two were dismissed months later after a reunion tour of the original make-up clad members proved wildly successful. As the sub-heading states, CARNIVAL OF SOULS is the last recorded efforts of Kulick and Singer with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. Drawing on music trends started as far back as the lean times of the '80s, CARNIVAL finds Kiss putting together a sound that draws from the dirge of Alice In Chains and the crunch of old-school Metallica. Much more somber than prior Kiss albums, nihilism runs rampant on songs such as "Hate" and "I Walk Alone." The mid-paced tempos of "Childhood's End" and "I Will Be There" inject some variety into a mix that includes Middle Eastern guitar phrasing in "Seduction Of The Innocent." In addition to Kulick flexing his instrumental muscles, two songs he co-wrote, "In The Mirror" and "I Walk Alone," feature lead vocals by him for the first and what turned out to be the last time on a Kiss album.
