Well, three weeks ago my parents in law were here on holiday and on the first day (Monday) that the rain stopped we arrived in Windsor soon after 1.00 on a blustery afternoon. Having managed to park the car, no mean feat here, we headed straight up the High Street to join the long queue of people waiting to gain entry into the castle.
Since my last visit to WindsorCastle, in 1983(!) things have changed somewhat. In those days you were free to walk the ramparts, look at the buildings from the outside, only having to pay if you wished to enter the state rooms or StGeorge's Chapel. Now you have to pay £12.50 for an all-in ticket, lump it or leave it.
Fair enough, from the numbers queuing - it took us about 30 minutes to gain admission - there are plenty of people willing to pay any price to see inside ...

Advantages: Beautiful architecture, on the Thames, plenty of B&Bs Disadvantages: Pricy, can get busy esp weekends
contains a large area of Victorian townhouses and other buildings, well worth a wander (well it was for someone new to the country like me).
If you continue on High St, following the castle walls along Park St, you come to the southern gate of the castle leading onto the Long Walk. The Long Walk was first laid out in the 1600s, and stretches for three miles in a perfect north-south line. Three miles doesn?t look like far when it?s perfectly straight and almost flat, but after walking down it for an hour, the distance makes itself felt. At the end of the Long Walk is the equestrian statue of King George III, and there is a brilliant view of both the castle and the surrounding areas from the statue if you have time to walk all the way up there.
The north end of the Long Walk is also the northernmost point of the Windsor Great Park. To ...

~~The Travel~~
We flew with a basic airline that were a bit of a pain with checking in but we got throught that pretty quickly and the flight was only 55 minutes. Cork airport was completely empty and so by the time we got off the plane our luggage was ready- so we thought things were looking up.
We found some link buses from the airport to the town and we were given the impression that we would be dropped outside our hotel...... WRONG!!!We were dropped in centre of town and told to walk the rest of the way.
Ok so we were only a quater of a mile away but it was pouring with rain and we weren't allowed to check-in until 12.30 (it was 9am in the morning).
