Sit back, get a comfy sofa, a yummy drink or two, put the lights to medium, bass up, sound to medium and away you go. Mellow, dumpity dumpity dump rhythms and a handsome young man singing, to just me (no body else in this world just me and him)…
I brought my first Jamie Cullum Album last year, about the same time as I brought Katie Maluas first album, and fell in love with them both. Last week I brought Katies 2nd album and if you see my review, was not that impressed, so I was very nervous when I brought the Catching Tales incase he was telling tales!
The image of Jamie Cullum on the front of the CD gives a hint of the contents, comfy, relaxed, young, happy, the back of the CD has a picture of jeans just a little bit worn and a bit too long with comfy trainers and again is showing the stress-free style of the CD.
I found that every track was mellow and comforting and original (even
the cover tracks sounded original and new). I really couldn't pull any particular track out as being better than another, the whole album to me was just perfect. It is all very mellow jazz type music with the very mature voice of Jamie, very easy listening and relaxing. The cover tracks of 'I only have eyes for you' and 'Our day will come' are better than the originals.
Let me go over the songs in more detail: Get your way - The track has a bumpy melody and I found I could hoover and cook, read, relax, drink etc (not all at the same time) to it. It is used to advertise the album
London Skies - Not as 'jazzy' as some of the other tracks. Jamies voice is quite gravely and envelopes you like a comfy cardigan.
Photograph - A melody that is quite bland, wich goes slighty uptempo in the middle, but keep the cardigan on its still very comforting
I only have eyes for you - AT this point while soaking in the bath, its nice to take a long sip of the wine, and dream.... oh yes the original sung for me... mmmmm
Nothing I do - Not the best place on the album for this track, more uptemp and conjurs up pictures of hoppig, skipping down country lanes, with the sun shinning, kids running, dogs playing, butterflies flying, oh heaven, dumpty dumpty dump
Mind Trick - A contemporary pop rhythm if not a little droll
21st Century Kid - A foot tapping stroll, some nice touches with key changes, quite a mellow beat that is also quite big
I'm glad there is you - I think this is a cover - but if it is - it is so far removed from the original I dont recognise it ! I think it might be a Nat King Cole type of cover - I recognise the lyrics. Anyway the tune is a bit bland, but still comforting
Go God - theres an underlying melody that gets the dumpty dump going, written by jamie himself its a bit dull compared to the rest of the album
Catch the sun - I like the way the key changes in this, the rythm is very bopoty yet smooth, uptempo and happy
7 days to change your life - back to panio and Jamie, very mellow - back now infront of the fire with that big glass of red..
Our day will come - this is a cover (I know it is) and in quite a reggie style, foot tapping and more happiness
Back to the ground - Cuddle up on that sofa, and just enjoy
Fascinating Rhythm - Of course when on the sofa, dont put the wine to far away, by the time your this far into the album the wine make a difference to the perception of the album, the tune is tappy and happy and lets drink lots more and have fun
My Yard - bumpty dumpty bump, happy melody, not fussy or anything - just nice
I brought the album from ASDA for the usual £9.97 which I think is really reasonable for a CD in the charts. I think I'm going to prefer this album to his first as now I am familiar with his style of music and singing, this CD - the music - washes over you like a really nice hot bath soak. Oh yummy - pass another drink and settle down to listen to it again (and again, and again)
The Down side - I found the word booklet very unreadable. I quite often like to sing along to the tune and use the booklets to aid with the words, but this was nearly impossible. It has been presented in cartoon style, using several different font types and colours (even within a sentence)
Overall though - OH YES its lovley

Hi, now it's much better, still won't buy this for me, but this is my own decision and is not interesting for any rating ... Many regards, Sven (Zoobremia)

Well, sorry, but a CD-review without the titles is most of the time not helpful or only somewhat helpful, there are only few exceptions ... Well, there's a rule, I don't buy CD's in a shop, where prices are sticking above the titles, well, the same is in here, no chance for a buying-decision ... Anyway, many regards, Sven (Zoobremia) P.S.: Let me know, when this one's edited ...
