The Hunks, Holland's equivalent to the Californian combo CheapSuit Serenaders, perform exquisitely over the 19 tracks, using period instruments and trying their damnedest to keep up with Scott's frenetic arrangements. The results are stunning: humour abounds, and both well-known Scott titles (the ubiquitous "Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Cannibals" and "The Penguin") and lesser cuts (the ultra-rare "Egyptian Barn Dance") swing. Scott went on to perform straight jazz and even dabbled with electronica (the three volumeSoothing Sounds for Babyseries) later in his career, but it's his cartoon music featured here--filled with muted trumpets, rimshots, and Middle Eastern melodies--that's so unforgettable.--Jason Verlinde

I was at the local Tesco, deciding which chocolate treat I would delve into, when I spotted a mini pack of Celebrations, costing just 90p. I am one for variety, and thought this is much better than just a plain bar of chocolate, so decided to give it a buy. I hadn't had Celebrations in years and was looking forward to tucking in.

I love the Celebrations box, it's so well designed and is really sexy for just being a bit of cardboard. Like a sexy woman it leaves a nice bit of cleavage, that being a little plastic window just teasing you with the sight of a topic, mars and oh my god a slinky wee galaxy. This review is going to be real hard work as the saliva is dripping down my chin but luckily enough I have my Manchester City bib on????..

Full title: Celebration On Planet Mars: A Tribute To Raymond Scott. The Beau Hunks Sextette: Robert Veen (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Ronald Jansen Heijtmajer (clarinet); Menno Daams (trumpet); Jakob Klaasse (piano, celeste); Gert-Jan Blom (bass); Louis Debij (percussion). Recorded at Studio Dureco, Weesp, Holland from May 16-20, 1994. Includes liner notes by Irwin Chusid. This is the Beau Hunks' tribute to Raymond Scott. This Dutch ensemble has also recorded works by American composers Leroy Shield, Ferde Grofe, Edward MacDowell, and a few others. Scott's work from the late '30s fits closely with the expertise of this band, especially in this scaled down form. The music is a catchy animated jazz-pop hybrid that went on to be used extensively in cartoons produced by the Warner Brothers studio. These 18 pieces are faithfully rendered and recorded in crisp clarity. However, far from being merely a nostalgic exercise, this music swings and comes alive in whatever moment it's being played. The Beau Hunks recorded another set of his music, MANHATTAN MINUET, which is equally recommended (as are all the albums released by this vital outfit).
